Oh that whacky Ghaddafi and his thugs. The idea that a dictator would fire on his own people, well, I suppose dictators are like that, but that an official who works for the dictator would take that order ... I guess that happens too. I guess there are people who take that job seriously and fully support the machinery of power.

I ended up dissociating myself from a group I'd been a part of for many years when they started claiming seriously in the aftermath of Ian Tomlinson, that the only reason people joined the police was to murder protesters and that the student protests would end in a bloodbath. Turns out over the years I've developed a severe intolerance for bullshit.

Then you have real protests, in real police states that really do serve to provide a sense of proportion. Likewise it's comforting to know that when officials within the US start to suggest such they get the bums rush at the nearest opportunity.
