I don't know if you remember this, but several months ago, I installed SMF as a test bed for tinkering. I didn't remember it at all, until this morning.

Go take a look today after several months of it running on it's own, in "high security" mode.

I'm about to go ahead and kill all the crap, but I wanted you to see what I was laughing at. This is from an unattended forum.

I'm going to clear it out and install a few things like "Honey Pot" and "Akismet" just to see what happens, but it seems like a good thing we didn't go that route at this point.

Ahhhh... Ummm.. Yup.

by 17000+ members. Looked a lot like Moobunny ... Had to just delete the site since I accidentally deleted my own Admin account trying to go through the 577 pages of users and delete them all.

Needless to say, while I'm sure I could have done more to secure it, I don't think SMF was the answer.. :)

I wonder if any of the Viagra spammers bought anything from the Penis Enlargement spammers...

Statistically speaking, one in a thousand. Unless of course those 40000 posts were all from the exact same spammer.

heh... Regardless, it was certainly funny to see that software get spam bombed like that by a bunch of asshats with bots.

Only remembered it existed when I woke up this morning with 1000+ messages about Amiga.org being out of hard drive space again and decided to do server maintenance.

I re-installed SMF and before I could turn on the anti-spam stuff (3 minutes), had 33 new users and 45 posts.

Cranked the Captcha and password requirements up to "high", then installed "Project Honey Pot" and while it doesn't seem to have actually blocked anyone, it's kept them from successfully registering or posting (so far).

I think, just for grins and giggles, that I'll leave it running to see how long it takes them to get past it.

47 minutes. Just started getting spam posters applying for slots. Nope. SMF officially sucks. :)
