You sound like the 1%.
I have nothing in common with the 1%

I don't try to force people to commit crimes against themselves or others.
I don't try to force people into demeaning themselves
I don't believe in using people for my own profit
In business I believe in equanimity

Well, I think it's safe to say that your mom sacrificed a lot for your family. And, really, what is this, but just another sacrifice. And if you don't really use Facebook, it's a pretty painless one, at that. You end up resorting to doing whatever you can. If you're desperate enough, you do end up compromising yourself and make that sacrifice for your family, so that one day maybe they can have something better.

And that's really what's happening here. These companies are feeding on the folks who don't have alternatives and are desperate for whatever they can get. Personally, if I were in that situation, I doubt I'd even have a Facebook account, but it's strange times.
People are supposed to make sacrifices for family. At least that's the way i was brought up. Making sacrifices for family is not the same thing as being a sacrificial lamb for a corporation. Call me crazy but no boss is allowed to pry into my personal business. They can expect a certain amount of my time in exchange for money. If they treat me respectfully they can depend on my loyalty. That's it.

Of course, I refuse to work for people who don't respect me, so it works out ok. And what I mean by loyalty I refer to my silence on private business stuff, comporting myself in a dignified fashion when representing the company and respecting the integrity of the workplace (ie, not ripping them off of stuff lying around).

But anything that happens outside the work hours is off limits.

My point is, there are a lot of people who have very good reasons why (family) they can't afford to make that distinction.

But anything that happens outside the work hours is off limits.

Morally, I certainly agree with your stance. And it's good that there ARE people who are in position to stand against this sort of thing. But I couldn't blame anyone who caved on this issue to feed their family.

Ya! Besides, any descent security expert would know how to "sniff" out any passwords being sent across the network! ;)
Descent security experts also know that the leakiest part of a security system is the human factor.
