I would be satisfied if President Obama would move to his choice of Socialist countries (at least temporarily) and enjoy that lifestyle himself for a while as an ordinary worker.

Second time you bring up this canard. It wasn't effective the first time either. Using a list of countries that have "declared themselves socialist" is like using a list of preachers that have declared themselves "cured of being gay" by the power of Christ. It's merely declared yet, they're still gay!!

One also has to be aware of the fact that many poor countries that have been raped by western powers and plundered of their resources turn to socialism out of poverty an powerlessness so the countries are often in terrible shape before they are socialist. Declared socialist countries are also blockaded and punished by the western powers for not being toadying enough.

Many Western governments including the US have been more socialist in the recent past than they are now. They have also had periods when they were far more capitalist. Like capitalism so much? Try living in some 19th Century factory town in England. Or you could go and live in France where there is public healthcare and or even Holland where communities have public bicycles which you are free to hop on and ride around at any time or hop a ride on a public bus (no fare) in some community in northern Washington - or any of a number of other mixed economy places with heavy socialist leanings.

Or you could go live in an end game capitalistic society like the medieval feudal system where everything of value was owned by the local lord. Or you could live in a capitalistic mecca like a company town were everything is owned by the company and you work for the company and buy in the company store on company credit and fall behind a little more every day and die in debt.

Your simplistic viewpoint fails to encompass the rich diversity of the real world.

I can't remember who it was but this reminds me of someone on either here or amiga.org, claiming that the Nazis were socialist, simply because the word 'socialism' appears in their party name.

MLK the III has come out strongly against the association with his father and the Republican Party.

The other thing not noted in your post was the change of the southern democrats to the Republicans. See in the 60s the KKK and the racists moved out of the Democratic party to the Republican Party. Driving this point home was MLK Jr's statement that the 1964 nomination of Goldwater was a 'wedding...of the KKK and radical right'.

I think we all appreciate history and certainly the Republican party under Lincoln is different than the Republican Party we today.

I agree Goldwater was likely the last true Republican. The Reagan run to presidency combined and enabled the religious right to gain a political foothold in this country. Not a good thing to empower the Christian form of the Taliban. IMO w/o the southern strategy and bible belt the Republicans wouldn't have a party today.
