The reason the social underclass exists today is due to a couple of generations of neglect ...

The reason the underclass exists is to serve as a warning. There is no policy of full employment because it is inflationary and increases the cost of labour. Most economies are managed to have a certain level of unemployed people so that employers have a cheap desperate pool of low skilled work to call on and to threaten higher skilled workers with - because most of us are not many missed paychecks away from joining the underclass.

As psychological protection against this knowledge we like to think that there is something intrinsically wrong with the people in the underclass - just as we once blamed lepers for having leprosy. Mental health problems are certainly over-represented down there but the hopelessness many of them feel is simply because there is no hope. Because we fear "infection" we don't like to associate with the underclass and employers don't want to hire the unemployed.

Don't be so down on your compatriots - that's an international trait.

I, for instance, will believe any old nonsense, as I'm sure Jim and Dammy will be happy to atest. :p
maybe, but i won't be having a beer with them :D

Ironically it was of all people a group of Muslims who got me off of the streets and really sorted me out. Learned a lot about the Sufis, interesting people with a pretty unique way of looking at life. Kinda like the hippy movement meets Islam... Not my bag, but interesting none the less.

Since you are new here (and many of the fella's here know this already), I have been a freelance artist my entire career. I have been 'unemployed' many times in the sense that when one job ends it can take time to find another. At NO time have I Ever used welfare. I may be an artist, but I have never tried to get a grant. And the main reason is that I do not wish to be told how to make my art just because someone is loaning me money.

I have never taken money from the government because I am no bum. I also decided that I wouldn't have children because I wouldn't be able to raise them properly with intermittent income. Unlike some dreamy people I do NOT believe people can 'Have It All". As an adult you must make choices and sacrifices.

Every job I got was strictly from my work ethic and talent. I got no handouts or advantages. I did not have any connections - not even from school because I did not major in art. I got work because I am stubborn, persistent and I refuse to take no for an answer. When I met sexist people I put them on my 'do not call' list.

I eventually worked with some extraordinary people and we got awards. My goal was to make art that would live after me. My work has been seen by millions. They don't know my name (and I'm fine with that), but when I am dead that work will still be entertaining millions.

I have never used drugs, I don't get drunk, and don't mistreat people (too much) :D
I have woken up at 6AM and gone to bed at 11PM for decades. Even if I was only working at home. Where some idiots get the notion that artists are undisciplined, lazy and drug-addled is beyond me.

You've got to watch out for those Muslims. Have you seen what some of them put on their curry? Oh, wait, yes you have. Never mind.

Pity the waiter didn't bwahahahahah!

Back on topic, I guess it was only a matter of time before Mr Gingrich popped up on fstdt...

During a discussion about using the federal government to force states to allow religious groups to discriminate against same sex couples when placing children for adoption, Gingrich said liberals are out to destroy faith itself.

As president, Gingrich said, he’ll hold the line.

If look at history from the mid-1960s, we’ve gone from a request for toleration to an imposition of intolerance. We’ve gone from a request to understand others to a determination to close down those who hold traditional values.

I think that we need to be very aggressive and very direct. The degree to which the left is prepared to impose intolerance and to drive out of existence traditional religion is a mortal threat to our civilization and deserves to be taken head on and described as what it is which the use of government to repress the American people against their own values.

Linky.

I seem to recall that similar arguments were made about the Jim Crow laws back in the day....

Also, inb4persecution.

I think we know who is intolerant around here, mr newty

"isn't it amazing some of the crap American's believe???"

What is amazing, is that you actually admitted it!
Way to step up to the plate Cecilia.

Now if only some non-Americans could do the same.
But alas, their noses seem to be so high, that they can't smell the crap they believe.

There might be some hope for Robert though.:drumroll:

That is an apt description of the man or as Paul Krugman quoted on ABC's Sunday talk show, Gingrich is "a stupid man's idea of what a smart man sounds like." So much for the Gingrich aura and his inexplicable public appeal in some quarters.
