Climate Change Under Predicted

Thought it might be appropriate to resurrect this old thread rather than start a new one.

Australia adds new colours to heat map....

From Today's Register news item:
University of Melbourne scientists believe they can attribute the unusual heat of summer 2012-2013 to human-driven climate change.

“This extreme summer is not only remarkable for its record-breaking nature but also because it occurred at a time of weak La Niña to neutral conditions, which generally produce cooler summers. Importantly, our research shows the natural variability of El Niño Southern Oscillation is unlikely to explain the recent record temperatures.”

The researchers put a 90 percent confidence level on their analysis, and added that we'd better get used to it: the chance of similar events is five times higher than prior to the onset of climate change.

If Michio says something's wrong, that's good enough for me. :D

NOAA's GOES-12 satellite was decommissioned on August 16th, 2013 after 3,788 days in service. From April 2003 -- May 2010, GOES-12 served as GOES East, providing "eye in the sky" monitoring for such memorable events as the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and the series of blizzards during the winter of 2009-2010. After suffering thruster control issues, GOES-12 was taken out of normal service and moved to provide greater coverage of the Southern Hemisphere as the first-ever GOES South. During that time it provided enhanced severe weather monitoring for South America.

This animation shows one image from each day of the satellite's life -- a total of 3,641 full disk visible images.

MN Summer update... We started the summer very cool and wet. However, we quickly regained the ground as we had many hot days. So many, in fact, that it's offset the 'cool' and summer 2013 for MN, assuming the forecast is correct for the next couple of weeks, will end up being one of the hottest. Not as hot as 2012 but likely in the top 10.

Scotland had the second hottest July on record. 2006 was the hottest.
