They probably see themselves as martyrs. They certainly have attracted a lot of attention here, and not just international.

What I see in Russia is similar to what I see in Greece. Ultra-nationalists like the "Golden Dawn" party of thugs identify with powerful institutions like the church. Not sure about Russia, but blasphemy is illegal in Greece. Of course, you can say what you like about any non-Christian religion, but the slightest thing about Orthodoxy will have you landed in jail. Putin is a lot like Golden Dawn except he does a slightly better job of hiding the thugs. But as more people resist him the more thuggery (and questionable convictions) we'll see.
