Gotta love the DDR-style 80s phones of the PTT :D (PTT = the Dutch government-controlled telecom company until 1995) My parents did have exactly this phone as well, as well as the sticker on it
And the emergency number sticker reveals that this telephone is used WELL after the 80s (112 was introduced in 1997) :D

There's nothing wrong with existing gun laws except for the fact that the government either won't, or can't afford to pay to enforce the laws already on the books.

You know, without going and doing too much research myself I'd say that I can probably believe that. Politicians love passing laws - it makes them look like they're doing something, and the people love thinking that lots of laws means tough on crime - but in the end, nobody wants to pay for any of that to try to make it work - so instead, on the next go around they just pass more and tougher laws.

.. which -- like the previous 1000+ laws -- has no funding for being enacted or upheld..

This probably should be in a different thread... But I'm too lazy.
Growing up on the US / Canadian border, I may tend to see more of life reflected in hockey terms than most people... But I think it's appropriate, here.

The current NHL is the perfect example. The more you keep adding rules, and taking away judgement calls, in the effort of being more strict and consistent... The less all of it becomes enforceable. Despite the best intentions of the officials, despite the extra training, despite doubling the officials on the ice, despite the Toronto resources... Despite all of it, the worse the calls get. Why? Some say the game is faster... Or the respect is gone... Or you need the fighting... But ultimately, I think you have to look at the rule book. It is a hodge-podge mess of mandatory penalties with no room for interpretation or nuance.

And I think our gun laws are the exact same. There is plenty of regulation. There is plenty of spending. There are even plenty of good intentions. But what we have is a maze of regulations that make it difficult for average people to buy a gun legitimately, while criminals have no problem getting whatever they want. We have all these zero tolerance laws. Which makes for zero interpretation, and zero sanity. How do we back down from that cliff and get back to something that is fair, sane, and enforceable?

To me, that's the question that still needs to be answered. And it needs to be answered for a lot of facets of modern life (still including hockey).

Maybe you could cut back on the military. You would have all the money you would ever need. Do you really need a military that big?

In Australia we solved the problem of guns by banning them 20 years ago last week. To this day i have never seen a gun in the city or suburbia.
