GM Seeds and the Militarization of Food - and Everything Else

Much of what you say is right Fluffy, but if you choose to set your sights on GMOs, Monsanto wins.

You can't fight Monsanto directly. Monsanto is like China - but labeling is North Korea.
If you go after Monsanto then you are going after "Capitalism and the American Way", you will be portrayed as anti-corporate, anti-free-enterprise, socialist, etc.
However, everyone pretty much agrees that labeling is completely legitimate. Labeling is all about freedom and the right to know. Monsanto has been fighting the labeling crowd by basically lying - it is a great weak spot for them. As soon as there is a niche for clearly labeled food that does not contain Monsanto GMOs there is the possibility of public boycott. If all contents of your food were labeled down to which GMOs were in there you could decide whether you just like roundup ready corn or added vitamin B rice. The public could, at least in theory, decide what kinds of GMOs they will accept.
Admittedly people just wanting labeling isn't going to get much done, but maybe if Rabbis would find that GMOs were not kosher something would happen. If 2% of the population can get kosher labeling on just about everything then the majority of people should be able to get GMO labeling. It just takes a certain amount of dedication.

@Fluffy, You're right if you call out any company we see some Republican wonk cry you a communist. I think with the banking problems in the 80s and again in the 00s this too big to fail idea needs to be addressed. When the Robber Barrons owned the most wealth (which is less than they do today) we saw the US implement New Deal sorts of laws and anti-trust regulations. That's when the anti-monopoly stances were put in place. It's time to look at those again because 3% of the population controlling 94% of the wealth is clearly a failure. And actually something Jefferson said as well. Too big to fail should be too big to exist!

It seems we have a couple of related ideas being lumped in with GMOs. GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms. Round up is a chemical pesticide not a GMO.

I guess you have not heard "Round Up Ready" GMO crops? The "food" you eat has been drenched in Round Up.

@Fluffy,
A lot of what you describe is not necessarily a GMO problem but as much as it's an economic problem. GMO is a technology that feeds into what you describe as a bad economic and patent system.

GMO's aren't necessarily bad. Increasing cold tolerance helps expand the range where crops can be grown. Drought tolerance helps areas of the world that are dry and short on water be more self sufficient. And as climate change, changes the world provides flexibility to aid in sustaining societies through the change. Some other plants have been made to absorb higher quantities of heavy metals. This helps improve soil conditions and water conditions so food crops can be grown without absorbing those heavy metals and feeding them to their kids. Increasing vitamins in other plants allow people to grow those plants and provide better nourishment in low food quality areas of the world.

IMO each GMO needs to sustain the unique analysis and testing to verify the ideas work and reduces harm to humans and the environment.

....
With any technology there are trade offs. Rocket engines are awesome! They are good as they get us outside the solar system. They launch earth satellites which improve communications along with providing some of the best data and predictability for weather events in the history of the planet. Rocket engines are awesome! Awesomely bad as they make missiles and ICBMs a reality. We have the one of the least amount of work, push a couple of buttons, to kill someone (drones) or large masses of people (nukes).

Let's not be the European luddite whitewashing GMOs as all bad. Instead take a realistic and analytical approach and use those which aid and improve the human condition.

Wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong.

I hope this helps.

I have. I simply do not assume all GMOs are Round Up. One can have Round Up applied to a non-GMO crop. One can have a GMO crop with no Round UP. One can have Round Up applied to a GMO crop. And, one can have a non-GMO crop with no Round Up.

So here's one - Papaya. They tried various lots of chemicals and found nothing to protect this crop against the Ringspot Virus. Without GMO's it's likely the Papaya would not exist. Use of the GMO reduced the amount of chemicals used and kept a food crop alive that likely would have died out. GMO Payapas have been in production since 1998 without any known ill human effects. Sounds like a fairly reasonable GMO.

Better than nothing! Any Republican (or dems) that votes against this are in the pocket of Monsanto.
It is. Label the GMOs and let the consumer decide if they want to buy it or not.

There's more evidence that soda is bad for you than GMOs. I'm sure you'll be outlawing sodas over a certain size too.

Monsanto used GE to sell more Round-up and more Round-up means more poison in the environment which means more poison in people.

Meanwhile, while the west chases after a quick-fix technological solution (just like we do with our weight and our moods) people in other countries are looking to what can be accomplished with hard work and good old FARMING.

The problem is that it likely is impractical for the giant agribusinesses that are trying to lock up the food supply. In fact, it's antithetical. Killing the small producers is what the game is about.

In the events now occurring in China, however, she says, the Gene VI toxin has apparently mutated these otherwise naturally occurring viruses, which are then ingested by pigs and poultry through their eating of these genetically modified crops, than have further mutated to produce the deadly H7N9 avian flu virus.
Even worse she continues, the multiple organ failures being reported from those having died from the H7N9 virus “exactly mirrors” the 19 studies linking these genetically modified crops and foods to human and animal organ disruption.

nice!! yum!

Why would you suggest such a thing? Don't be silly. Anyhow, soda itself is not the problem. HFCS is the problem. HFCS is a poison that should not be in anything.

1 soda/day has been linked to an increase in diabetes And besides the HFCS don't forget about the harm from artificial sweetners like aspartame. Mountain Dew and other sodas also have Brominated Vegetable Oil which over 100 nations have banned. It's been linked to memory loss, fatigue, and birth defects. So more than just HFCS are at work there.
