Seems to me that the onus would still be on the Republican party, as it was the Dems could comfortably leave a turkey like Obama in place whilst their opposition continued to be in thrall to their wingnut demographic.

Consider it akin to Intel/AMD in the late 90's - it was only when AMD released their Athlon64 that Intel woke up to the fact that their P4 series was a bag of crap.

Until both the Republican base and the party start to offer a credible alternative to the opposition, the Democrats will be able to continue their current path. Shockingly, as bad as they may be, they aren't socially regressive and until the GOP stops being so, they will continue to not only remain unelectable but also fail to properly hold the gov to account. The party of no has to evolve.
