hugo chavez... dead... days after protests asking wheres hugo

in that sense, Chávez was no different from most political leaders in most eras and places, including ours. And he changed over time, partly in the light of new circumstances, and partly because long years in power – and Chávez wanted a lot more of them than the 14 he got – invariably alter a man, often for the worse.

Mar 22, 2011: Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on the planet Mars, Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavez said

Aw. The actual quote you provided is much more speculative than the assertion made in the song. Funny as it was the "he actually said that" turns out not to be true. Oh well. He was probably right about the fate of our own world as far as unbridled resource use/waste is concerned ... but how did the last two paragraphs end up being about NASA? - weird.

We know the US didn't like him, but he was much more popular with the rest of the world.

remember how when the whole world try to help after katrina... hugo offered to help however he could... and bush told him to stick it cause we didn't need no commie pinko scumbag help?

You’d think George Bush would get down on his knees and kiss Hugo Chávez’s behind. Not only has Chávez delivered cheap oil to the Bronx and other poor communities in the United States. And not only did he offer to bring aid to the victims of Katrina. In my interview with the president of Venezuela on March 28, he made Bush the following astonishing offer: Chávez would drop the price of oil to $50 a barrel, “not too high, a fair price,” he said—a third less than the $75 a barrel for oil recently posted on the spot market. That would bring down the price at the pump by about a buck, from $3 to $2 a gallon.
But our President has basically told Chávez to take his cheaper oil and stick it up his pipeline.

remember how when he (hugo) went to speak to the un, and he walked to the podium he says "i can still smell the sulpher burning", after bush had just left the podium... bwahahahaha!!! my eyes are watering...

Usual story: popular, democratically elected leaders with socialist leanings? Label them dictators.

Technically, he's not a dictator. He's more like Silvio Berlusconi in the sense that he controls the media and isn't afraid to use it for his own personal gain. We hear all about how important money is to an election campaign. In Venezuela that wasn't really the case however the government was allowed to fill the airwaves with pro-Chavez propaganda for years while the opposition only had a short campaign window of a few weeks. So although the election process was quite fair by most standards, the overall campaign was severely slanted.

That's not even remotely accurate. Silvio actually owns most of the Italian media the majority of media o0wners in Venezuela (rich white ones, because the majority poor couldn't afford to own media companies) were against Chavez. Chavez could use the government channel but the majority of media remained privately owned and largely opposed him. While the actual political campaigning was short, there as here, the political game continues on the media 24/7 all year long with the slant they put on the news - just like here with the private media singing the praises of private ownership and bemoaning all things public. Even the venerable (public) CBC has been cowed into leaning more towards Harper - since he gets to appoint the top people. That little election window is just the part where they show the names and faces of the people to vote for. It's the rest of the time that the policy and national mood is set.

Democratically elected! Stop, stop! You are killing me!!!

Of course, it depends upon your definition of democracy, insofar as, is there any example of a truly democratic society? If that's what you're getting at, I agree.
However, I very much doubt that is what you mean. I'm guessing your point is that you believe elections in Venezuela were demonstrably less democratic than what would be generally expected in a modern, so-called democracy. If so, I'd like to see some evidence. As far as I can see, Chavez was elected with clear majorities every time, in elections that were deemed free and fair.

He offered the poor a way forward. He delivered on that promise. 80% of the population is poor. If everyone gets only one vote each what result do you think a democratic election would give?

This thread is a great example of how both the "left" and "right" are completely wrong.
