June 2013 - 340th month in a row of above average temps

you know how cars today let you know what the temperature is?

today it read 104° (F)
I kid you not.

now, it's probably also reading the heat coming off the car surface after the car sat in the parking lot for about an hour but still......

the weather reports say something like 98°

the car read 101° on wed, up to 102° on wed and 104° today. I've NEVER seen that on this car.

We're having our hottest July for many a year.

Heat island effect. Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt NY is in middle of a heatwave.

that's very interesting.

of course, everyone who has lived in the NY areas knows that Manhattan is hotter than the surrounding city..

that said, I don't live in Manhattan.
to protect the security of my family I'll just say I am on Long Island. And while it's quite civilized it also is festooned with trees and bushes and flowers. So it's always cooler than Manhattan. The fact that I saw these high temps really amazed me

btw, one of my neighbors is growing corn

We also see forests with Heat Island Effects. In the winter in MN the forests are often warmer than the prairies. As it warms during the day the trees reflect the heat and help keep the warmth during the nighttime. By winters end the combined effects means we can see double digit warmer forested areas compared to the grasslands. One can take advantage of other properties of trees to keep your house warmer in the winter. http://www.arborday.org/globalwarming/winterWarmth.cfm

In the case of the hot US, again it's about 1/3 of the 48 States not just NYC and can be seen from space. http://www.businessinsider.com/heat-wave-seen-from-space-2013-7

After our extremely long lived winter (I was still snowboarding the last week in April) Scotland has been somewhat taken by surprise to be in the middle of the best summer weather we've had for many a year.

And our Southern neighbours have been issued with "level 3" heatwave warnings:
The heatwave warning for north-west England has been raised to "level three" by the Met Office, as firefighters in parts of the UK tackle grass fires.

Having said that, I'm thoroughly enjoying this weather while it lasts. :pint:

Wow, with stats like that you'd think the world is becoming a warmer place!

I guess we are all going to die.
Be as flippant as you want. The reality is history is littered with the bodies of humans lost due to the changing and lack of natural resources. Humans have a strong will to survive and when resources get scarce lives get lost. Both directly from the lack of resources and indirectly as we kill each other off to survive. Pre-planning often produces more efficient use of resources and better results than shooting from a hip in the time of crisis. It's something that we humans excel at better than other animals. I see no reason we should not use our strengths to help prevent the probable harm to ourselves, and the planet which supports us, from the impact of a more swiftly changing planet.

Who's being flippant? I've seen articles and "documentaries" that rising ocean temperature will unlock trapped methane and we will all die. I guess we all need to just accept we are going to die.

Really? Where?
Methane is a more reactive gas in the atmosphere. When that starts happening the Climate Change will accelerate. People are flexible and adaptable. I don't think anything here spells the end of humanity. However, changing climates and the shifting of natural resources does likely mean an increased probability of war and death.

As long as it is heirloom and not GMO, smart neighbor :)
i don't know what they are, but i thought you would like to see how we are civilized in NY - we don't arrest people for growing plants on their own property

I for one look forward to paying generously for carbon credits.
