He needs to cram a public system down people's throats (which is actually a very popular idea) to break the current system of money influence.

You bring up an interesting thought. But I don't think even Obama is that stupid. Should he succeed in craming such an overhaul down the taxpayer's throats, I believe he would be committing political suicide (no 2nd term) and ensuring that the Democrats lose control of both houses in the mid-term elections... in light of current public perceptions and debates (such as they are). I think the administration and the leaders in the house / senate screwed up from the get go by just trying to put together various bills and send them out rather than start by conducting public hearings describing a purpose and goal. Certainly the lobbysts would have jumped in but the public could have been brought along, hand holding as it were... not pushed into something that caused this reaction. Perception accounts for alot in politics and the perception now is that this is a forced effort (IMO). As Yamamoto alluded to during the Pearl Harbor attack, we are a sleeping giant. If you wake us, the results may not be what you expected. This is where I think the Democrats have fundamentally errored.
