Meanwhile in Cairo

I saw something similar on CNN last night. Nasty. Gee I wonder why they don't like the guy...

Guess what Israel is getting less of from Egypt all of a sudden!

An attempt was made on the life of Egypt's new VP.

He survived but now he has something to think about. Assassination attempts tend to come from inside. This is simply because insiders have the best access to the target and the best information about the targets activities and his security.

The intent may have only to be to kill his security personnel. There is, to a certain extent, some honour between classes. Then again, it could just be a warning. Or it could be just a failed attempt. Any which way, it puts Mubarak's team on notice.

Something more upbeat

Well, they did it. President Hosni Mubarak resigns as leader

Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down as president of Egypt.

Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement in a brief statement on state TV.

It came as thousands massed in Cairo and other Egyptian cities for an 18th day of protest to demand Mr Mubarak's resignation.

Protesters responded by cheering, waving flags, embracing and sounding car horns. "The people have brought down the regime," they chanted.

I hope they're realistic about what they just bought themselves. The hard part is about to begin, I hope they are as successful with that as they were these past two weeks.

There were rumours that Mubarak was no longer in the country when his broadcast was made. Further to that, after the broadcast the army apparently withdrew guards from the palace. Mubarak didn't seem to have any intention of stepping down and he doesn't seem to be the one to have announced it so someone else looks like they have "stepped" him down.

Did the VP unilaterally step him down or did the army put a gun to his head. Is the US still a majority share-holder? Is Mubarak really out or is this all just theatre without any real change?

Good old fashioned show trials and executions used to really clarify a lot of these things. Dead men don't rule!

That's a very good point and I have to admit have been thinking about that as well. However, Mubarak isn't exactly in his prime, he was pretty much done anyway. In other words, he's not giving up much. My theory is he wanted to create some confusion to allow him to sneak out the back door. I'm not sure we knew where he was at any point in the last 2 weeks. Still, once the parties subside, I'm sure one of the first questions everyone will be asking is, where exactly is Mubarak?

If everything is as it seems, and probably is (although if anything these past two weeks have been nothing more then an endless stream of contradicting stories, no reason to believe that's all over) then it would be interesting to see how the Egyptians treat Mubarak. Was it just time for him to go or will they want to also exact revenge. From what I gather more of the former, but those last minute deaths (martyrs as they're called) could have changed people's feelings towards the man. Will he be the next Saddam, to die at the gallows? I'm guessing he'll find some protection, but you never know as it's hard to pay people off when your accounts are frozen: Switzerland froze funds of Mubarak, 20 officials: Muslim Brotherhood
