music interlude

Never been a K.D. Lang fan, or even a Leonard Cohen fan really, but there's a special place in my heart for this rendition. It was recorded in 2005 at the Canadian music awards, the Junos, here in Winnipeg and I remember hearing it for the first time and instantly developing a whole new appreciation for Lang's vocal abilities. They say it's one of the most covered songs with over 2000 known versions and each version is slightly different in tone and intent. This is so far my favorite version. I know it's kinda religiousy but it makes me think of what I love most and I've been listening to this song a lot lately. This is for you Sophia.

First time I ever saw kd lang, it was 1983, first week at U of A and there were free shows in the quad. She was playing with the Reclines, cowboy boots, big hat and a twirly skirt. She was jumping around all over the stage and belting out tunes. Little punk tomboy cowgirl. I met her briefly about 7 years later and she'd had some hits already by then. I met Leonard at a party in 1990 and he was a pretty down to earth guy (at least at the party). I saw him in concert in Vancouver just last year and it was a great show.

Getting back to kd, I love her rendition(s) of "crying"

"Waiting For The Miracle"

Baby, I've been waiting,
I've been waiting night and day.
I didn't see the time,
I waited half my life away.
There were lots of invitations
and I know you sent me some,
but I was waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
I know you really loved me.
but, you see, my hands were tied.
I know it must have hurt you,
it must have hurt your pride
to have to stand beneath my window
with your bugle and your drum,
and me I'm up there waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

Ah I don't believe you'd like it,
You wouldn't like it here.
There ain't no entertainment
and the judgements are severe.
The Maestro says it's Mozart
but it sounds like bubble gum
when you're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

Waiting for the miracle
There's nothing left to do.
I haven't been this happy
since the end of World War II.

Nothing left to do
when you know that you've been taken.
Nothing left to do
when you're begging for a crumb
Nothing left to do
when you've got to go on waiting
waiting for the miracle to come.

I dreamed about you, baby.
It was just the other night.
Most of you was naked
Ah but some of you was light.
The sands of time were falling
from your fingers and your thumb,
and you were waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come

Ah baby, let's get married,
we've been alone too long.
Let's be alone together.
Let's see if we're that strong.
Yeah let's do something crazy,
something absolutely wrong
while we're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

Nothing left to do ...

When you've fallen on the highway
and you're lying in the rain,
and they ask you how you're doing
of course you'll say you can't complain --
If you're squeezed for information,
that's when you've got to play it dumb:
You just say you're out there waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

lol... i been walking around and my friends will say something current and all politicky (deliberate yeah) and when they are done i look at them and sing... and then kill Caesar... hahahaha!! fellers are looking at me all kinds of funny lately....
Mentioning politics with US Americans is like putting a little crack in a huge water dam. I can imagine the confusion :D :D :D

Ya, not many male vocalists can really cover Roy Orbison. Lang is right in his vocal range and she pulls it of very well.

A little down tempo, in a electro-jazzy kinda way. If you know the band Japan, then this should sound familiar.

Time for some more thievery I'm afraid...

Ok, time for some more CanCon.

Last Thursday went to see Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook live at the Pantages theater. Thought I'd post a clip here of a song he didn't do but I wish that he did:

And now for something completely different....

Couple of video's, totally uncomparable, so take your pick :)

Japanese rock?

Mongolian Motorhead cover?
