When local activist groups challenged Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton to live on a food stamp budget for a week to mark Hunger Awareness Month, he took them up on the offer and found out just how hard it was. Stanton kept a diary on the challenge, which allotted him roughly $29 a week, the same amount 1.1 million Arizonans receive from the Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (SNAP) each week.
By day four, Stanton noted that he was “tired” and “it’s hard to focus” after leaving the house for work without time to scramble eggs or eat a decent breakfast:
OK- ran out the door today with no time to scramble eggs or even make a sandwich. So I’m surviving on an apple and handful of peanuts, and the coffee I took to the office until dinner. I’m tired, and it’s hard to focus. I can’t go buy a sandwich because that would be cheating- even the dollar menu at Taco Bell is cheating. You can’t use SNAP benefits at any restaurants, fast food or otherwise. I’m facing a long, hungry day and an even longer night getting dinner on the table, which requires making EVERYTHING from scratch on this budget. It’s only for a week, so I’ve got a decent attitude. If I were doing this with no end in sight, I probably wouldn’t be so pleasant.

somebody will go after him for welfare fraud so they can ignore the billions in "give aways" to oil companies... welfare queens... really? 30 bucks a week eh? get a whole lotta bling for that. bet it buys like, mountains of cocaine and other drugs too... and these are the folks breaking the back of the federal government eh? sweeeeeeeeeeet!

We are supposed to cry because he is too lazy to cook for himself?

A wonderful friend of mine grew up on welfare. Meaning his mother raised several children like this.

She did a good job of it because he went to college. Plus he was over 6'2" 235 lbs and ALL of it was muscle. He was well read, really smart and very athletic and Very disciplined.

anyway, I met his mom a few times and the 1st time she said to me "You look hungry" and proceeded to cook. I think she did that on reflex or something. trust me, i don't "LOOK" hungry :D

She really was an amazing and generous woman.

But one thing I recall is how my friend would say (with some sorrow) that his mother was Always tired.

I can't even imagine how she raised her children under those horrible conditions. She had to make incredible sacrifices.

Anyone who thinks welfare is some sort of vacation is seriously deluded. And horribly uncharitable.

If you are expecting sympathy from me for lazy pot smoking layabouts not getting enough fast food, you are barking up the wrong tree.

lol... and still they ride... like my cousin always said... we are all winners in our own way... you too

like those bums bush and cheney who got DUI's - who knows how many dozens of times they went out drunk and driving (or shooting)

And what about the non lazy non-pot smoking non-layabout people on food stamps? Jobs are just growing on trees all of a sudden?

No. Governments don't make jobs. That's what capitalists do - remember.
Highest Stock Market ever. Largest corporate reserves ever. Nearly, if not the, largest average worker to average corporate disconnect ever. Real world is showing that giving the have mores more doesn't create jobs. But, then again reality always did have a liberal bias.

You are learning, almost there! GOV doesn't make jobs, they destroy jobs!
Republicans are committed to the self fulfilling prophecy. They don't think government works for us but against us. When elected they do all they can to make government work against us. Don't bother focusing on bills that would create jobs. Instead focus on regulating the womb and cutting the money for the least among us.

I think you should at the very least try to put all this in the context of people who rely on food stamps Red. And who are those people? Quite a number of them are gonna be single moms. And one thing I gotta say is that being a mom is the toughest job there is and that's because it's a 100% full time job. And yes, it can be so demanding that cooking yourself a meal can be a daunting task. If I were to call my wife lazy for not cooking dinner, well, you guys probably wouldn't hear from me again....

So countries that have no governments have lots of jobs and countries with governments have no jobs. Interesting - do expand more on this theory and when you understand what you are talking about you can explain it to the rest of us.

Of course they are single moms. We can't have people getting abortions instead of trying to raise a child on food stamps that nobody wants them to even have.

Many of those single moms will be black - because their husbands are more likely to end up in jail.
