Republican said Foster Care Kids should only wear used clothes

What do you have against goodwill?

As a society have we really come to this point of materialism? What's next, cell phones and laptops? Oh, wait...

While I was a young kid I got mainly hand-me-downs and/or used clothes. I remember going a long period of time with only black dress shoes. That was a lot of fun in summer camp playing sports:rolleyes:

I have nothing against Goodwill. I do have problems with Republicans requesting the State should dictate that kids must only wear something from Goodwill because they aren't living with their blood related parents.

Who is buying the clothes? The state or someone else? I don't think foster kids need Gucci.

Clothes made in China replaced hand-me-downs. Back when hand-me-downs were the thing the clothes were made locally and at local wages, and they tended to last.
Then the fashion industry got itself into high gear so that even if clothes were only a year old you couldn't possibly wear them again.
Now the clothes are made to last about 6 months in China at prices below what used clothes used to cost.
Curtains are now so flimsy you can't make clothes out of the fabric and even burlap isn't as sturdy as it used to be and is getting harder to come by. Anyone wanna wear plastic bags maybe?
Mind you, I wouldn't mind if more people wore rags. I often wear my trousers until you can see my ginch and the cuffs are frayed. I call that "comfy".

While it is the State this still doesn't mean that kids couldn't do without new. Shoes are one example that doctors cite are critical in growth to not reuse shoes. Plus what's wrong with new? I just bought 3 outfits brand new from Target for my daughter the cost - $6. The $12 pants and shirts were marked to $2 each. Which is less expensive than some of the kids outfits I've seen used at the local Goodwill.

I think the point is, you can find some very affordable brand new clothes without any label on them.

My biggest concern with this is that the used clothes market may not provide adequate selection and certainly limits your choices. Kids with unusual body shapes or sizes may have a hard time finding quality clothing. You don't want kids to look ridiculous.

Although this article does miss out on another important factor: we don't know how much money will be saved. We also don't know if the cost of used clothing will go up as the demand surely will. Ironically, it's the conservatives that tend to hate rationing of this nature and yet they are the ones rationing here. Whyzzat?

plus it's a big egocentric f**k you in the face of those kids. A decent state dresses its' children decently.
Perhaps the US citizens should have a good look at his salary?

is new from Walmart ok? or only from Nieman Marcus? who decides?

Kids clothing is rarely worn out, they outgrow it,
Goodwill is overflowing with kids clothes, like new, and lots & lots of it is designer stuff

How overflowing?? Goodwill bales donated clothes into 1000# bundles and then its sold by truck loads ... and most of those semi trucks are headed to Laredo.
google "Ropa Usada" Laredo Results =70300

Maybe you should look at what's available from Goodwill

The article is very short. Fluffy makes a good point that I was going to make before simply just writing "meh". The used clothing stores around here like "Goodwill" have very deep selections of clothing for dirt cheap and the clothes is typically near-new condition. If you are getting mental images of kids walking around wearing a barrel with suspenders, you are off base. IMO realistically the state should only provide the absolute bare necessities for foster children, whatever that is. I'd hardly call used clothing cruel and inhumane. Maybe you grew up in a wealthy family who always wore the latest designer clothing, but many like myself survived wearing hand-me-downs.

There are other factors here.

1) Encouraging reuse of used clothing will greatly reduce that foster kid's carbon footprint.
2) Cheap Chinese clothing are made in sweatshops that violate human rights. Buying such cheap clothing encourages such abuses.
3) Used clothing stores such as Goodwill are nonprofit organizations whom in turn put any proceeds into charity for the local community.

Ironically those on the left claim to worry about the environment, basic human right and helping those in needs unless it costs less taxpayer money? Whyzzat?

These aren't normal prices but clearance. See my last post;)
