It's a bit like Scientology. Being convinced of our righteousness excuses you from having to be moral.

Excuse me for bumping this thread again but there's been some wild speculation on parts of the net lately.

Syuxnet was in Japan last October. Now, I haven't been able to find out if there is any Siemens equipment at the Fukushima plant but if there was and it was in the backup systems (which don't get tested or audited nearly as often as they should be partly because of costs and partly because of normal human optimism)... well, things could get embarrassing.

It's a big "if" though, but an interesting thought.

Stuxnet was so targeted that I seriously doubt it. It targeted facilities with very specific equipment and numbers of equipment, some of which was Persian made. If the right set of equipment wasn't present it would do nothing. And the equipment it targeted was in fact centrifuges. I don't think those even exist at the stricken Japanese reactor sites.

I don't think stuxnet actually has anything to do with it, but IF it turned out there was something there I wonder how the liabilities would settle out. It would be a big deal. However, the point is probably moot, but it would be a whole different realm of "collateral damage" and if this type of cyberwarfare continues then one day we might expect something along these lines to go wrong.

Well, it certainly would make the headlines. But it's just as likely other malware infiltrated the site. We've seen malware get onboard the international space station (by fluke, it wasn't specifically targeted, but still...). It's bound to happen to a nuclear fascility, no question about that.
