UPDATE: The latest episode being used to fuel the flames of war are two attacks yesterday on Israeli diplomats: one in India and one in Georgia.

Indian investigators do not believe Iran was responsible, though he writes that “American media just parrot” the accusations against Iran by Israeli officials. We’ll likely never know who was actually responsible, though what is clear is that the attacks are being instantly exploited by Israel-devoted neocons to further depict Iran as a Grave Menace

I see no reason to believe either Israel or Iran in this case. But to say Iran would never do such a thing is as silly as saying Israel would never assassinate Iranian scientists - in the Middle East there are few things you can count on but payback is always one of them. Iran has done a lot of crazy things lately and at times I can't help but wonder if they're doing all they can to provoke an attack. In fact, I'm almost wondering if there's some grand trap set out for Israel & the US (maybe they already have the bomb).

It is conceivable. Iran would have a lot to lose in a situation like that, though, and, of course, the US has demonstrated repeatedly that when it gets involved the leadership of the country they attack does not survive - by which I mean "remain living".

It could be that Russia would love to draw the Israeli airforce into a barrage of the latest Russian missiles shipped both as a message to Israel and a bullet point on the sales brochure.

It is possible that Tehran is playing tit-for-tat and saying "hey look, we have magnetic bombs just like you do and you have soft targets just like we do". It could be that the Mullahs are signalling an ability to operate internationally - but striking inside Israel, the UK or US would be effective - though it would be wise to use non-violent demonstration of capabilities directed at worrying the right people.

It could be that there is a third party somewhere in the region who doesn't like Iran, the US/K or Israel and would love to see them caught up in an extended conflict - more or less the plan Al Qaeda was running with all along.

We don't get to see the full board, nor all the pieces but control of the worlds biggest oil producing region is a prize worth fighting over, at least if you don't have to do the fighting and live off of the profits of other people's efforts rather than working for a living.
