The UK needs "Knife Control"

The UK needs ... real news.
I was there last week and they were truly pushing this rubbish. I guess they just want to keep people scared (but not for the right reasons). The tabloids were all abuzz with this stuff and the TV was abuzz with it and I'm sure it was more interesting than the falling house prices and other stuff.

This is at a time (as they mention parenthetically on occasion) of low knife crime. I'm sure now that it's hyped we'll get a few more hard guys trying to prove that they can stab a few lads too, a few copycats will be inspired. Maybe they hope to get a knife crimewave going so that they can pass more laws about arresting people and holding them for no reason.

Damn this stuff is ugly and annoying. I don't really know what effect it's having on the population as no-one seemed to really care to bring it up in conversations. Seems like they sensibly manage to block it out and get on with their lives but the shrill panicked headlines are a menace to mental health. Must be something important going on that they don't want to have to publish about. Wonder what it is.

350 knife assaults EVERY DAY, as blade menace spreads to rural areas

22,151 serious crimes involved knives and sharp instruments in the financial year to March 2008. This figure does not include an estimated 250 fatal stabbings, which are counted separately.

Roughly a third of non-fatal knife offences, 7,409, were committed in London,

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith rejects the idea of sending knife criminals to jail, saying it's too simple a solution.

The 'wasp knife'can deliver a ball of compressed gas capable of killing its victim at the press of a button

I'm not really sure what your point is but Fluffy is correct:

The statistics also show that while the risk of being a victim is at its lowest ever level, people still think that the rate is going up.

The annual crime report for 2007-2008 reveals the longest recorded period of falling crime - down 48% from 1995.
It shows there were five million recorded crimes. All the main categories were down, including violent crime and sex offences, but drug offences were up 18%, gun crime was up 2% and murder was up 3%.

Papers like the Daily Mail are famous for sensationalising bollox like this and making it appear that things are deteriorating rapidly when, in actual fact, they're no worse than usual.
This kind of tabloid nonsense is exactly why the gullible believe knife crime is worse than ever. (And, for example, that Iraq had to be invaded because a bunch of Saudis flew planes into the WTC - how many idiots fell for that one ;-))
Are you saying you're one of the easily led sheeple? Who'd-a-thunk-it?

Don't get me wrong, violent crime is a problem but it's always been a problem.
In both your country and mine.

Can I just also point out that those stats are for England and Wales only.

Scotlands stats are counted seperately and won't be counted until september (I think).

Glasgow used to be the knife capital of Britain, I wonder if London holds that title now. It actually wouldn't surprise me if it didn't.
