The Ultimate 90's Thread!

At least Barbie Girl could be conceptualised as a cynical exposition of modern attitudes around the value of women in terms of their ability to be manipulated into predictable and stereotyped roles by a society which promotes mediocre conformity. That Toy Box stuff just made me want to vomit.

LOL, wow, that was a beautifully expressed opinion!

I agree the Barbie girl song is cynical and fun at the same time. I mean, the song is catchy.
I'm not familiar with this Toy Box thing. One of the videos was blocked for me and the other isn't that entertaining.

btw, I have a thread dedicated to pictures of my Barbie doll(s) - one of my favorite being my (reissue) of Astronaut Barbie in her flight suit. The link is in my profile.

and yet i don't agree with that assessment of the situation.... "barbie" as an icon was as much a part of my youth as it was for girls... we sat through the commercials and watched barbie evolve throughout the years... i remember in the 70's that the womens liberation movement felt about her in much the same way as you do... she placed unreal expectations on physical beauty and seemed to put women in a box as far as careers... she evolved... i look through the list of careers barbie has had spanning the years and i find myself somewhat cheated that the only dolls for boys are cops, firemen, construction workers and GI joe... talk about a career box... check out this list...

paleontologist? she's hardly stuck in stereotype land... barbie is the bombdiggity and little girls are lucky to have a self confident, professional role model to emulate...imho

yeah, poor ken tends to be treated like an additional accessory for Barbie. Although there are the Barbie and Ken motorcycle sets where they both have leather jackets and even a bike.

Hm, I did like the astronaut/pirate/knight/cowboy career options Playmobils and Lego offered. Though they did not have a vacancy for a programmer, which I, despite this all, knew from a very young age was the thing I wanted to do. :D
