For the first time this year I'm taking a week off work. Heading to Toronto again mostly to see U2 live on the 16th & 17th. As an added bonus, the Toronto International Film Festival is on, so maybe I'll catch a really weird and bizarre flick with lots of female nudity from some European country. Also trying to get tickets to a George Stroumboulopoulos show. Should be fun.

Anyone else see, or is going to see, U2? They end the tour in Vancouver. If I had the cash I would have liked to see them there as well. Oh well.

Anyway, that's all.

I saw U2 live in Glasgow on 18th August. They were pretty good apart from the sound cutting out for most of one song.

Cool, I see U2 tonight. My sis saw them in Dublin and a cousin in London. They all said it was pretty amazing. I see them tonight. Can't wait.

I did however get onto The Hour. The guests were Edward Norton, Michael Moore and Anna Kendrick. Note sure when they will be aired as it was a pre-taping, but still, it was very cool. Ed was a bit nervous at first but George got him to loosen up turned out to be a decent interview. George latter told us (he always loves to stick around and chat with the guests) that Ed was a particularly difficult interview simply because he was just not the type that naturally opens up in that environment. The audience for the Hour is only a couple of meters from the guest and it's totally unscripted so some guests tend to get a bit nervous. Michael Moore was of course in his element and guys like him tend to take over, but George kept him under control and got him to say nice things about George W Bush. Anna I never really heard of before (yes, I never saw Twighlight although I might now just to get a better understanding of her as she seems prettu cool). Anna was a fun interview and the first time I've been that close to a rising Hollywood starlet.

Anyway, I gotta get going....

Have a good one ... or is that "tonight" actually last night in time shifted forum land(?) ... either way.

Nice.

I wouldn't go as far as 'amazing'. Not by a long way. It was 'very good' but I've been to scores of better gigs.

Having said that, I go to a lot of gigs: Orbital this Sunday! Yey!

Well, I saw two U2 shows, the first (on the 16th) I was in the nose bleeds. Pretty good, the stage was neat but it was hard to see the band and I thought the stage wasn't the best for such a big venue. The sound quality however was great, although that may be due to the venue - Rogers Stadium with the roof open. We were sitting under the CN tower and it was pretty amazing how the crowed got into it (for the record, it was our section that got the wave started :-) ).

But nothing compared to the show on the 17th, where we managed to get a position about 6 rows back, dead center inside the inner circle. A totally different show there. Again the venue itself added to the experience with the CN tower to our right and high rise condos to our left, the 360 claw above us and U2 all around us - not to mention 50 thousand fans. The sound quality was superb, as if I was listening to a high end stereo with penetrating base and non fatiguing highs. And I have to say I never saw a more well behaved crowed. Typically, at such a position I'd expect to get squished from every angle as it happened at No Doubt a while back. But with U2, everyone kept their space, let you breath and kept their swet to themselves. Maybe it was because U2 fans are older and more mature, or maybe it was because the stage was setup in such a way so that everyone has a good seat, I don't know, but it added to the experience. One memorable moment was when Bono missed his queue or just forgot a line and he was just staring up towards the high rise condos and he saved himself by wondering out loud if the poeple up there could see the show. And he addressed them directly by asking those up there listening to flick on and off their lights. And sure enough we saw some lights flicker. It was funny because before the show started we were wondering if those who live up there were getting a free show, and Bono seemed to have the same thought at that moment. I guess it's things like that that stick in your head and make the show memorble. Although, Bono's suite during Ultraviolet Light, with the thousand little red lasers shooting out, is something I'll never forget either.

*sigh* Now back to the real world. And Fluffy, I do recommend you get tickets to see them in Vancouver if you can.

Here's a little video clip I made with my canon SD550 - half decent video, crap audio (I think the mic is toast or it was just too loud for the little condenser mic). It's from the second night of the concert. It's a link to a Facebook video, so I have no idea if this will work at all but I did set the privacy so that anyone can see these two videos. This is the 3rd last song of the night, and the only one where Bono wears a suite that fires laser beams from the seams. Pretty cool but the video barely did it justice.

well, the vids work

yes, the audio is terrible

call me crazy but i never cared much for shows with all that lights and smoke stuff. I guess I'm a Hardcore Girl all the way.

Oh you're no fun Cecilia! Although there's something to be said about hardcore girls... ;-)

Anyway, here's some more pics, but not from U2. See if you can figure out who's in these pics:

And I thought of Red when taking these photos.

And oh yeah, I forgot; when we first landed in Toronto, we ran into the entire cast of Trailer Park Boys. Unfortunately I didn't have the camera then.

I would much prefer to see Still Little Fingers than U2, altho U2 have made some nice songs.

LOL

it always makes me laugh when people get bent out of shape when someone like Mike is just ASKING questions and pointing out ideas for others to talk about. call me crazy but isn't THAT what the Constitution allows people to do?

Same here.
I saw the Dickies in July and they were fantastic.

On a different style again, I saw Massive Attack last night and they were very good too.

Tonight, Champions League football......

*sigh*

Yeah, it's never cool to listen to the biggest bands in rock, especially when they're almost 50 years old. I'll be like those old folks who have posters of Elvis in their living rooms I guess. :(

Massive Attack would have been nice. I found this out too late, but it seems I missed Underworld by about a week or two in Toronto. Oh well. Underworld is one of my fav electronic bands, although I would have preferred to see them with Darren Emerson. I did see Crystal Method twice though, so I'm happy. :-)

Btw Robert, are you an Ultravox fan? I heard they toured again recently. One of my favorite bands when I was young.

@ Mike:

I was never a massive fan of Ultravox although I do like a lot of their stuff.

I also saw Underworld last year and have to say they were pretty underwhelming compared to the previous time (about ten years ago, I think).

wanna ticket? ;-)

Unfortunately I'm going into hospital for a couple of days and won't be able to go to either gig.
I'd love to go  , just a bit of a trip right now

i hope your hospital stay is short and successful!

Really? Wow. Honestly, I never heard of these guys, but I live in a top 40 town, it's a miracle I listen to anything that's off the beaten path. I just did a google search on them and found what must have been a really old video clip of them and assumed it was recent. *shrug*

I got to know them in the late 80's

they write great relevant songs that actually SAY something. see if you can find one called "harp". it's about racism in America

Well, it was definitely short; went yesterday at 8a.m. and was released into the wild just before lunch today.

Whether it was successful or not will take a little longer to establish.

With the god-damned-commie-pinko-NHS-death-panels I suppose the mere fact that they let me live should be considered success!

:hammer:
