@Red - not sure bout 'early winter snowfall' for ski resorts. I've spent many years traveling to Denver for skiing. Including Thanksgiving. So 12/22 isn't exactly early. For example, Winter Park was cited. In 2009 and 2010 they opened mid-Nov. A-Basin is sometimes open 11 months of the year.
Unforunately Christmas snow has not come to Minnesota. We average about 40% of the season by now. We've 1 inch at most, which has melted away. .. Too warm and dry for this to happen again.
Here is 2010 comparisions to average
January -0.1
February -0.4
March +8.9
April +8.3
May +1.4
June +0.8
July +3.1
August +6.4
September -0.8
October +5.3
November +2.8
December -8
Here is 2011. (Sorry couldn't find first half though last Jan was likely more negative than Jan 2010.)
June +1.1
July +5.6 (6th warmest on record)
August +2.4
September +0.9
October +6.4 (8th warmest)
November +5.6 (11th warmest)
December +5.0(current trend to the 10th warmest)
In the last few decades (sorry should have listened more) Minnesota has see later beginning to snowfall and earlier snowmelts. Definitely a change in climate no matter what one believes as to why.
