How BMI is now being used is (mostly) bunk. It was designed as a statistical measure for easy reporting of results in studies. It cannot, and it wasn't meant to, designate the differences on the level of a unique individual. That example of a bodybuilder being told to lose weight would happen if the profession only goes by BMI. So a Dr ordering a BMI reduction without knowing more about the person doesn't make good sense. And certainly insurance companies that charge more for higher BMI's are neglecting the individual composition for an easy statistical yardstick. I've run into people that note that BMI is a fallacy and explain the bodybuilder problem to me. The problem here is every one of them is NOT a bodybuilder. So, even if that problem is true it's most likely not true to them. They use it as an excuse. So unless you're in that very small group that BMI doesn't apply it's probably a fair enough yardstick to use to decide if you're healthy enough or want to do more work. If you're a higher BMI # then you are indeed more likely to see a positive return by dropping your BMI a couple of points.
