Look at the chess pieces, it's a checkmate against black, hence, "cheque mate"

I think i'm out of touch with Australian slang terms. It still doesn't really make sense. It must be a Victorian thing :p

Not sure if serious but here goes, just in case:
1. When you finish eating in a restaurant, you normally ask for the cheque (or the bill).
2. 'Mate' is manner of addressing someone and usually associated with Australians.
3. Ergo, where someone of another nationality may say, "Bill please, my good man," an Australian may say, "Cheque, mate."
4. The move depicted in the image is check-mate.
5. Having to explain a joke in this manner absolutely destroys any lingering, residual humour it may have once had.
