At risk of pointing out the blindingly obvious, if everyone was happy to give up their guns voluntarily there would be no need for the NZ government to pass new legislation.

"The problem isn't the guns, the problem is ..."
Why not go the whole hog and advocate arming theteachersworshippers?
They were also very rare in the UK but the UK restricted guns after Dunblane. Integration had nothing to do with Dunblane either.
There has been little in the way of mass shootings in either country since. You could argue that might have been the case anyway but if it makes it a little more difficult for a nutter to flip and go on a rampage, I'm all for it.
what about knife attacks...?
When was the last time someone carried out a mass shooting with a knife?

well, most people would be fine, but it's that ONE guy: the violent, angry virgin incel guy who doesn't want to give up his penis substitute. He's the problem. At risk of pointing out the blindingly obvious, if everyone was happy to give up their guns voluntarily there would be no need for the NZ government to pass new legislation.

yeah, there's ALWAYS one idiot, case in point: http://www.wbrc.com/2019/03/22/blou...y-goes-off-st-grade-classroom-no-one-injured/And that very guy is often the reason legislation is needed for things in the first place.
Most things would be fine if we could guarantee responsible, well-meaning adults were the participants.
But you know there will always be that one guy who ruins it for everyone.
Speeding - fine until Johnny decided to fly down a busy city centre lane at 106mph and wiped out 12 pedestrians.
Now we all have a limit set on how fast we drive.
Thanks Johnny.

A bit of a stretch there Robert. I quoted the gunman's words to show that Arden's reaction was in line with what the gunman wanted. I don't know what calculation the PM (or her staff) has done on the issue but a blanket virtual ban on having a copy or reading the manifesto might indicate that they have at least considered the problem of appearing to play into the gunman's hands while going ahead and doing something they have been wanting to do but needed sufficient political crisis to accomplish. So you do?
More seriously, given there is some evidence which seems* to support the idea that reducing access to certain types of weapons can help reduce shootings, wouldn't it be better to err on the side of caution?
I don't have a man in Washington. However, close intelligence co-operation inevitably leads to some entrainment using the international relationships to get around certain legal bothers like not being able to spy on your own citizens or propagandize your own citizens by using each other's agencies to do it for them would be hard to outright prove in every case but must be a tremendous temptation. The Five-Eyes are usually very quick to agree on International matters like Venezuela and it wouldn't be remarkable if information control didn't extend to the kind of analysis the agencies hand out to government officials - it shouldn't be hard to guide a captive audience towards making the "right" decisions. I don't think it's a stretch to say that all the best dictatorships had a strong presence in intelligence services.Or is the idea that NZ wanting to restrict access to automatic weapons after a mass-murder is actually all a Five-Eyes** driven smokescreen so they can cause your man in Washington some tangential discomfort more important than reducing shootings?
After murder rate passes NYC, London Mayor Sadiq Khan calls for sharper knife control
"No excuses: there is never a reason to carry a knife," Khan tweeted. "Anyone who does will be caught, and they will feel the full force of the law."
Maybe one day you will see this is about CONTROL, not peoples' individual safety.

Really? No excuse? I wonder how the human rights lawyers will respond to that. In Canada we already recognise the human right to carry a knife in school or on a plane or just about anywhere so long as you wear the right sort of hat.

Colorado shooting: Teenager killed in high school attack
A teenager has been killed and seven others injured after two pupils allegedly opened fire in a US school.
The attack at the STEM School Highlands Ranch, near Denver, Colorado, took place on Tuesday, police said. Both attackers have now been arrested.
Highlands Ranch is just 8km (5 miles) from Columbine High School - the site of one of the US's worst school shootings 20 years ago.
Another White Supremacist Nazi, no doubt, or ISIS.
