Georgia, the Olympics, the US armada and Iran

The Russians aren't allowing journalists near South Ossetia. They and the Ossetian paramilitaries have also been shooting at journalists and the UN.

Oh well, maybe some "unembedded" journalists but there's a war on and stuff happens.

I hear the Georgians have done their share of that sort of thing and that would fit too considering who they get their advice from. So far, though, I've seen a fair bit of news coming out of Ossetia with a fair bit coming from bloggers and other less connected journalists. Livejournal, apparently, is still up there.

Neither South Ossetia or Abkhazia are interested in independence.

News to me. I haven't seen any polls but I did hear a South Ossetian official being interviewed and he said their ultimate aim was an independent, united Ossetia. Are you saying he was lying or that he doesn't speak for the majority?

Was the said official a member of the Russian-installed government?

It's worth noting that there has never been a united Ossetia in history.

A referendum was held in 1992, the question was South Ossetia's accession to the Russian Federation - result was an overwhelming yes - but doubts were raised about interference.

The referendum in 2006 didn't mention joining Russia, however, South Ossetia's president (Russian installed, again) often mentions "reunification" with North Ossetia as a Russian republic (even though the two were never de-unified).

Whether the people of SO want independence or to join Russia we don't know. It's clear they don't want to be part of Georgia though.
