Georgia, the Olympics, the US armada and Iran

Georgians were sitting around with nothing better to do and just dreamed up this idea to shell the crap out of S. Ossetia? I believe there's more to it then that. I'm sure you've heard the reports that the S. Ossetians shelled Georgia first. The days leading up to the Georgian assault there were continuous skirmishes and word of a sniper war developing. Georgia offered unconditional negotiations but S. ossetia wasn't interested.
I saw some photos of bodies early on and that's what it was looking like. Snipers. Civilian victims. That's the same way they got the war on in Bosnia.
My take is that Russia orchestrated this.

That may also turn out to be true. It does get US troops out of their back yard so it's definitely worth doing but it's even better if the other guy starts it and with US still in country and presumably still having a say in what the Georgian troops do it would have been crazy to let this happen unless some huge miscalculation was made. Alternatively the Neo-cons may have thought they could make hay from a quick skirmish (or perhaps they hoped for an extended one). All the usual mouthpieces have been quick to roll out the usual propaganda.

Either way it really is - we do have a grand master playing against a gang of mental midgets - one hopes that the midgets go quietly rather than trying to Samson the planet on the way out.

Of course there is more to it than that.

First? Your own logic applies both ways here, Mike: South Ossetians were sitting around with nothing better to do and just dreamed up this idea to shell the crap out of Georgia? I believe there's more to it than that. ;-)

'First' could go back decades.

My take is that Russia orchestrated this.

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. I really don't see how any of us can be so sure what happened. As far as I can tell, neither side is blameless.

Making the Georgian's look like the aggressors is a classic trick.

Especially when they make it easy for you by shelling one of their 'own' cities.

(along with several appartment blocks that just happened to be in the way).

Of course the Georgians didn't cause any 'collateral damage'?

Politically, Russia has won big here and Georgia (and the West) have lost serious ground.

I agree.

What I find most revealing is that no one in the UK media seems to be considering what the population of SO want and how very different this approach is to the recent declaration of independence from Kosovo. All the talk of self-determination and absolutely hee-haw about 'territorial integrity'.
And hearing the hypocritical rubbish spewing from Mr. Bush is actually hilarious.

Just an aside here about the Georgian forces that were pulled out of Iraq to go back to fight in Georgia.

Local Iraqis were happy to see the Georgians leave. They complained that the Georgians, most of who could speak little English or Arabic, were rude and disrespectful.

Every dark cloud has a silver lining I guess.

Imagine the mock outrage if Russia airlifted troops and weapons to fight against the USA?
