Harper Disolves Parliament and Calls For Elections

My bad - it wasn't Grant it was Garth. Garth Turner apparently.
Seemed like a nice enough bloke but I only spoke to him for about 2.4 seconds. :-)

Oh, Garth! I've seen interviews with him on TV, he seems like a good guy. He actually has his own blog and even enjoys talking to constituents. In fact, he was kicked out of the Conservative party for blogging. Good to see he's found a party that's a little more open to the idea of communicating with the Canadian people. Yep, I'd shake his hand. Hope he wins.

Mike / Fluffy,

Does Harper really have a chance of getting additional seats to possibly make a majority?

Harper Dissolves Parliament

There... now you have something at home that deals with conservatives you can complain about.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7668738.stm

The Conservatives, led by Stephen Harper, won 143 seats, an increase but still short of the 155 needed for a parliamentary majority.
The opposition Liberal Party, led by Stephane Dion, has won 78 seats, a loss of more than 15 seats.

--

But Mr Dion, a French Canadian from Quebec, had difficulty connecting with English-speaking voters, the BBC's Lee Carter says.

I got this impression from my Canadian relatives too:
"How am I supposed to vote for a guy who doesn't even speak English?"

A somewhat small-minded view, I thought.

Personally, I think everyone lost in this election. The Conservatives lost their best chance at a majority (they managed a mere 37% of the popular vote - meaning over 60% of Canadians rejected them). The Liberals lost their party. The NDP lost the best chance they'll ever have of being a serious national party (they threw everything they had at this election and had little to show for it). And the Canadian people lost a lot of time and money on a useless election.

Btw, Garth Turner, the guy you saw in Toronto, lost his riding to a Conservative. I think that's too bad, but I think he could win a seat in a bi-election or something.

Overall, I'm happy Harper didn't get his majority - which is what sparked this election in the first place. I think the Liberals need to reinvent themselves with a new leadership and new direction. They also need to focus more on the West, which they currently seem to ignore. As for the liberal leadership, I like Dion, but he made some mistakes and his English skills made it very hard for him to explain his own platform. Add to this the proposed Carbon tax, which needed lots of explaining, and you had a recipe for disaster. I think he gave it a good shot, but it's probably time to find a replacement.

I'm sad that Harper has any support at all in this country. I have no respect for the man. The only thing that gives me some joy is that this was his best chance ever at a majority and he completely blew it. He'll think twice now about calling another snap election.
