Massive Vehicle Blast In Oslo

In possibly related news, a neo-nazi entered a youth camp just outside Oslo and opened fire.

According to the translation, it seems quite possible the two are related.

yeah, that's what is being reported here on US TV.....not much news after that, tho

They don't know who is he so it's hard to say he is a neo-nazi. All they said he is blond and isn't talking. What group he or he think he is associated can't be determined.

This is quite shocking, Norway is the last place I would have expected something like this to happen. The second wealthiest country in the world, with one of the highest standards of living and supposedly the happiest population. No involvement in international conflicts. Sounds like it was just one guy with a chip on his shoulder.

Perhaps too wealthy, perhaps too happy, perhaps too uninvolved in international conflicts, perhaps even too "socialist". Perhaps it's "the threat of a good example". The mafia Don says that it's his way or the highway. Some little pissant goes off and does it a better way - well, he has to get dealt with.

Very sad indeed, was quite shocked when I heard it on the radio this morning :(

Norway's been an active contributor to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.. Family of mine in te army spent some time there.
I hope it was just the single gunman today.

Been there quite a few times now. It's a really great place, apart from eating out and (especially) booze which is horrendously expensive.

It's also one of the few places which gets socialism "right", they look after the poor but it doesn't prevent a market system.

Shame to see such a horrid act in such a great place.

According to this article from yesterday (i.e. the day before the blast and shooting) the Labour party youth camp where the shooting occurred had just held a rally to boycott Israel and push for a Palestinian state - which is the same position that the ruling Labour government holds.

Fluffy, you forgot to tell us all how you so believe in coincidences. ;)

Very sad. I have several relatives in Oslo. Makes you think about the ones you don't always very often.

Coincidence and agency must be weighed against each other - I generally lean more towards coincidence where there are no people involved.

Israel/Palestine is an emotional flash point and there are extremists on both sides. It's not inconceivable that a small group could feel that their government has taken the wrong position on an issue and force is justified. Obviously at least ONE person seems to have taken this position. The sophistication required to prepare these attacks should indicate the rough minimum size of the group required. It may turn out to be a wholly "home-grown" issue but I don't know too much about what internal "Norwegian" schisms there are. Class war seems unlikely in such an egalitarian society. Muslims should support anything that goes against Israel so they should be sympathetic to the government at least on that front. A Jewish group may feel that fundamental Zionism is being attacked. It seems that a society like Norway should be fairly internally supportive of the society in general because it does, for the most part, give everyone a faitr shake so it would have to be a group that are outsiders or feel sufficiently divorced from the society they are in to feel like outsiders.

Mostly though, I already saw a lot of comment on-line trying to point at Muslims so I just felt it was time to point the other direction - just for some "fair and balance" :)

Really? What Israeli group took credit for the bombing like a Islamic group did? As we now are learning, it does to appear to be a single home grown nut job. Hopefully Norway has a death sentence.

 That's hysterical! When do Israeli groups take responsibility for anything? Even when atrocities are linked directly to Israel it's always not their fault or it's an accident and they deeply regret the loss of life.

On the other hand, Muslims seem to love to claim responsibility with multiple Muslim groups claiming responsibility for some events - even imaginary Muslim groups. You know, it doesn't take much to pick up a phone and claim to be some Muslim group claiming responsibility for something. Pretending an attack came from another source to incite a response against that group is not exactly an unheard of tactic. In Europe NATO (directed by the CIA) conducted several terror attacks and blamed communist groups for them under operation Gladio to uncut support for leftist political groups. In Iraq there are indications that British special services were detonating car bombs and blaming various Muslim groups.

As we now are learning, it does to appear to be a single home grown nut job. Hopefully Norway has a death sentence.

Getting a police uniform and sufficient firepower and going to a low security island to shoot kids, I can see the logistics there aren't so huge. It would take time and planning, of course. The big part would be building the bomb (and testing it). That's the part that would most likely require help (just like McVeigh had help with the bomb).

Not that it can't be done but generally you need time and money to do these things and for most regular Joe's these two things are mutually exclusive. It helps to at least have a financial backer.

OK, let's see - Murdoch is already implicating Muslims.

and Obama said. “It’s a reminder that the entire international community holds a stake in preventing this kind of terror from occurring.”, subtly associating the international war on terror.

But it turns out this terrorist is a right-wing Christian Zionist. He owned a farming business so he had access to the fertilizer. Other reports also say he's a Freemason and lived with his mother. He seems to have motive, money and time.

Police are not yet discounting that others were involved. He did manage to shoot 85 kids dead, after all - that's pretty dedicated for just one guy and there are survivor reports that suggest another gunman (though there is always confusion in these situations).

@Fluffy
Reading the info from the accused it appears he's a right wing christian. Perhaps acting alone but we've seen the type of impact this sort of home grown terrorist, such as Tim McVeigh, can wrought to a nation.

The PM of Norway has the right direction
the answer is more openness and increased democracy.
