MorphOS advocacy

If I lived anywhere near you I'd happily take that off your hands.

Yeah it sucks that shipping is so much. It also sucks that 2nd hand PowerMac are not as plentiful on your side of the pond as they are over here.

I probably could have bought it but I built a Hackintosh.

I did that too. Spent ages getting it set up, used it for a few months then stupidly clicked "OK" when the software update popped up. Killed it stone dead apart from the half of it I'd kept for Windows. Could never be bothered going through the hassle of setting it up again.

The box still sitting there, however many years on, only ever getting switched on on those rare occasions that I need to use winXP.

I considered that too. Then I decided it might be easier just to use an iMac virtual machine. Downloaded a few ISOs but they get stuck at the booting screen. Maybe I'm impatient, but I ended up just deleting it and doing something useful instead.

Yeah, I really don't know how many years of my life I've given over to aimless tinkering with computers.
Or indeed why.

By the time I did the Hackintosh thing, I already had two real Macs, one of which was much faster than the Hack. No benefit to be had, really.
Same with this recent MorphOS tinkering. It's a 600MHz G3 with no practical use I can think of.

I suppose I'm just inclined to tinker.
(That's not a euphemism, before anyone asks. :p)

600Mhz G3 is a bit long in the tooth. OTOH I really do use this 1.25Ghz G4 as my primary computer. I'm posting this message with it. I will really, really, be set when my 2.7Ghz G5 is supported next month. My biggest complaint was some issues in the TCP/IP stack, but this is being addressed in the next release (Feb 2013). The MorphOS team like to quietly fix things and spring surprises in each release.

There's your use if you pick up a faster supported computer, a primary personal computer. :D

I hear you, Jim.
And don't get me wrong; this stuff delights me.
However, I already have machines that can act as my main computer.
My MorphOS (and anything Amiga related) fascination is a wee bit harder to explain.

New PPC coming Who knows if there will be a desktop Motherboard. Though it'd be nice to see AmigaPPC and MorphOS make use of 24 Virtual Cores.

@faethor:

Didn't see that coming, to be fair.

Most of the Freescale stuff ends up as embedded processing. (Think router and iSCSI or Fiber to Ethernet backplanes.) So, I doubt it'll be a Desktop motherboard. They are fairly standard though as Linux and QNX is run on them. Though it could be an interesting one if MorphOS / AmigaPPC wish to stay with the Power Architecture.

One of the things I like about using an embedded processor is they have a longer lifecycle. The Amigascene is small. If we can keep a solution around for longer that may be a plus. Sure we're not the fastest kid on the block. But, this is a hobby, and likely not going beyond anytime soon. Processing with this guy would be more than adequate for the next few years.

Well, I've more or less thrown the towel in with my Peg1 & MOS, at least for the time being and am now back tinkering with my A1 & OS4.

Porting AmigaOS to ARM might be a viable option these days. They're only getting more powerful and their sites are on server work loads, so why not? Even AMD is getting into ARM production, I just read they poached some top dogs from Qualcomm, makers of the spiffy fast Snapdragon S4s.

Although really, I'd still prefer an x86 AmigaOS.

Well, I don't know how viable it would be in terms of time and manpower but yes, it would be nice.

As an aside, I just downloaded OWB to my A1 and am posting this with it. Quite nice and a huge improvement over previous OS4/MOS browsing experiences. Unfortunately the Timberwolf browser needs OS4.1 so I can't try that out.

Hyperion will never port to Arm it seems. All indicators are PPC or bust. There is rumbling of MorphOS moving to eith ARM or X864 in the future.

That sucks Robert, sorry to hear. Keep your eye out for a cheap support PPC Mac. I know it is harder on that side of the pond...

Would any of you guys be up for MorphEast?

If there was a MorphOS oriented show in South Florida, would you be interested? When I say show, I mean low key get together similar to Amiwest but without the pretense of a huge turnout. South Florida is an international travel destination where the things to do for a tourist is very deep. Sacremento is nice and has some interesting history, but for a pure vacation standpoint South Florida has it beat easily.

I think it could be fun if we could scratch together 1-2 dozen people. It is just casual conversation between doffo and myself right now.

Seems that MorphOS on G5 is edging closer... http://morphos.pl/423
" On the bright side I can happily say that SATA is done, fan control support for liquid cooled machines is done and AGP support for the U3 northbridge found in the G5 machines is done." It looks like MophOS 3.2 is in Beta for test users?

Though Craigslist G5 Towers in this area are all over the board. 1.8Ghz are around $100-$125 are probably reasonable for a hobby.

In related news the bathroom (except light) is done. Pic is prior to the mirrorsink.jpg

G5 acquired... Err sort of. I have a dual G5 Mac. It's videocard is toast. I can now watch out for Mac ATI cards at Ebay and other areas to see if I can revive this thing. No real rush and a great price of $0 invested, so far.

What speed? Air cooled or water cooled? If it has the liquid cooling system, it needs rebuilt. If you don't want to pay out the nose for a true Mac ATI card, you can flash a PC version for cheaper. I can assist in that if you wish.

I believe it's an air cooled 2Ghz dual G5. I'm picking it up this weekend.

I've flashed PC cards to make them Mac cards but I don't know if I even have any AGP ports on a motherboard any longer.. So I might have to take you up on this.
