Neil Degrasse Tyson does Cosmos

Yet another fan of the original series here. I have the Book, the DVD and even the CD with the theme tune.

Kansas to Black Out “Cosmos” Show Over Controversies
......several State senators in Kansas will propose a bill on Thursday that would force Fox affiliates in their state to black out the science show completely.
The bill, which many are expecting will pass, would force local Kansas television stations affiliated with Fox to pay steep fines for airing the program. Should any network continue to air all thirteen episodes of the show’s first season, the State would move to revoke their broadcasting privileges completely, driving those networks off the air.
the religious right cowards can't handle the truth

@cecilia:

What reason is given for stopping it being shown?

well, the article is satire but I put it here because it's so damn close to the way creationists react that it is 99% possible to happen sometime soon.

and the "reason" is simply because they see their "power" dwindling away

Neil DeGrasse Tyson included two quotes in his recent talk, attributing one to "Half of all schools in district are below average -- Newspaper Headline" and another "I have really turned my thinking 360 degrees on this issue --Member of Congress."

Google shows no headline matches for the "headline" quote

Google shows the closest thing to the member of Congress quote was Maxine Waters telling Henry Hyde that his claims about Presidential perjury had changed "360 degrees"

So Member of Congress = Maxine Waters LOL

I suggest in his next talk he use the quote from Rep Hank Johnson, who was worried that the island of Guam might tip over.

Or Shelia Jackson Lee who asked NASA if the Mars pathfinder had managed to take a picture of the flag planted by Neil Armstrong in 1969

Sciencer than thou

Another Day, Another Quote Fabricated By Neil deGrasse Tyson

At this point, I’m legitimately curious if any quotes or anecdotes peddled by Neil deGrasse Tyson are true. Over the last week, I’ve examined only four, and every single one appears to be garbage. The “above average” headline. The “360 degrees” quote from a member of Congress. The jury duty story. And now the bogus George W. Bush quote. These are normally the types of errors that would be uncovered by peer review. Blatant data fabrication, after all, is the cardinal sin of scientific publishing. In journalism, this would get you fired. In Tyson’s world, it got him his own television show.

Looks like that guy, Sean Davis, is a ways out on the autism spectrum. He doesn't seem to have any ability not to take things completely literally. He'd probably have criticized Robin Williams that all of his jokes were "made up". Certain autism spectrum people, I have noticed, have a great deal of difficulty with jokes because... they just don't make any sense.

Science!! doesn't have be be completely literally!!

Science is about questioning. But not too much questioning. Just the right amount, until you reach a proper consensus.

Of course science does. But statements
The “360 degrees” quote from a member of Congress. The jury duty story. And now the bogus George W. Bush quote.
are ones of politic not science. Yeah he got a pen story wrong. - Again not science.

I get you want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, ooh Tyson's is a left winger therefore all his science is bad too. Argumentum Ad Hominems (attacking the person) is not the same as attacking the science. No matter the politic of the person it's the quality of the science is what is accurate or not. That can only be found by ignoring the personalities and politics and diving into the research, methods, and accuracies. The questions are did Tyson accurately represent the current state of knowledge in Evolution, Global Warming, Gravity -- the answer is yes.

1) Venus indeed is seen as a Greenhouse Effect. The planet is hotter than it should be and it's the atmospheric conditions which trap that energy and increase the solar effect, compared to what one would expect without an atmosphere. There's been quite a bit of articles on this research. Does Venus need more research - yes. But, saying Venus is because of a Greenhouse Effect does indeed convey our current understanding of the planet.

2) Multiverse is not science. Correct. Heck the article says it, itself - "“Many of us suspect" was presented by Tyson. It was clear that Tyson conveyed one of the current hypothesis and one science itself is investigating. Did he spend too much time on this, perhaps. But, he did convey it's not proven.

3) There is no sound in space - True. Should the spaceship had no sound? I'll give you the artistic license should have been tighter on this. And certainly would have been an opportunity for Tyson to discuss no sound vs Star Wars effects.

4) Bruno - again not science. History of Science.

5) The universe is not a year old. - Duh! Your writer clearly does not understand the use of analogies. Tyson never said the universe is a year old.
