Canada goalkeeper Erin McLeod was called for holding the ball too long before sending it back into play late in the game. The call was not only rare -- few soccer fans had ever seen it before -- but it also gave the U.S. an indirect kick in the box as Canada led 3-2.

There was a cool article I saw on the web about Usain Bolt's 9.63 second run. It charted the top metalists since the beginning of the modern games. The early game record was 12 seconds. If we had a time machine today's fastest 8 year old in the USA would be a metalist in those early games.

Rumors are circulting with some more practice and cleaning a sub 9.5second run for Bolt wouldn't be out of the question.

Given how nonchalant he looks whilst skelping everyone else, I wouldn't be surprised by that.

Seven Cameroon athletes missing from Olympic Village

Group thought to be seeking asylum in Great Britain

It's not the first case of missing athletes in London. Before the July 27 opening ceremony, Sudan's embassy confirmed that three athletes had gone missing; one had applied for asylum and the other two were expected to do so.

I haven't watched many events, been too busy with my baby girl. However, I do think of her as an "Olympic Baby" as she was born during the Olympics. Ya ok, that's corny as hell, so sue me. :D

I did however watch most of the women's Canada vs US football game. Wow, I've never seen such terrible calls before, especially back to back. Not only did she make two questionable calls against Canada, there was an instance where she could have called a foul against the US inside the box and she didn't. The game looked rigged to me. What a disgrace to the sport. I know FIFA will never allow video replays on close calls (because apparently bad calls are just part of the game not to mention it would also get in the way of fixing the results), but the Olympic committee should seriously consider it because this is bullshit. On the plus side, Christine Sinclair sure scored some beautiful goals.

Spice Girls? Ugh! I would have been more impressed if they had Jimmy Page and Robert Plant up there, or if they just managed to get David Gilmour to sing Wish You Were Here instead of that kid who can't sing (although it was nice to see Nick Mason on the drums). The burning man was a nice touch though although I have a feeling most people didn't get it.

Sacrilege of the most heinous variety. Mason should be hanging his head in shame. I almost switched it off at that point.
Glad I stuck with it though, as The Who were superb.

That said, the opening ceremony was much better than the closing.

Well what did they think was going to happen to tourism after months of warnings by both sides of the media saying any attempt to go through London would be impossibly slow? Not to mention all the horror stories about brand police running around accosting people for wearing the wrong shirts and drinking/eating the wrong things.

I note that the army are saying it'll take them years to recover as a result of G4S's cockup too...

All this because the powers that be wanted their sports day.

sport of kings after all... at least mittens and his wife have a tax deductible Olympic horse that can get subsidies.

The Olympics are often a money losing venture. At least for a while. For nations like Brazil, the Olympics might make sense as they signal to the world that they are a major player capable of big things, and that attracts attention. London however is already considered to be a big player, so I'm not sure what the message is in that case - other than Paul McCartney's mediocre voice went to crap.

Also, it may have come to the point where people have realized that watching the Olympics at home on a 60" widescreen TV with full surround is actually better than being there. At least for some events, that's most certainly true.

No it doesn't make sense anywhere - unless it's to signal that you are a bunch of rubes who are suckered by that kind of thing or you wish to have a feel good excuse to increase your "security" capabilities. Get the public to pay for their own chains.
