The Edwards infidelity story is playing out now, but why? Is there any reason for it to be on TV and in the news? Does it make any difference to his chances of becoming president? No. And that's the real point. This is a 1) distraction, 2) muddy the waters story. It goes after a Dem (hoping to tar the Dem brand) who isn't running for Prez and distracts from a Repub with the same foibles who is running.

Later if these McCain issues are brought up then the media can treat it as if the ground is already covered and no-one cares about those sorts of stories anymore.
