Republicans - older, whiter, and far righer

The current block of leaders is fairly centrist as they continue to back and support Obama who has demonstrated himself to center if not right of center on many issues.

Don't be ridiculous - he's a socialist!

So by your own figures and definitions, more than 15% of them are something other than your hated Progressives.
actually 7% of those consider Progressives to be "too conservative"

The Hollywood Left, obviously.

It's a horror film, taking the likes of Fred Phelps and a sprinkling of David Koresh as the inspiration. Lets face it, both the US and UK has and has had it's fair share of extreme right authoritarian religious loons...

Give it a different name and don't release during the run up to a primary election and I could probably shrug off the stereotypes and political jabs. That is not what is on display here as our very own Whyzzat members have displayed in this thread. There is a political message being pushed and it is getting eaten up.

Kevin Smith is from New Jersey. he started out making independent, low budget films in his home state.
in fact all his films are "personal", hardly "hollywood", whatever the hell that means.

it's always makes me laugh how easily intimidated some people are. it's a film. it's supposed to make people think and feel. is that scary to you?

Use the flip side for name and stereotypes. Change the name from Red State to Blue State. Instead of backwoods rednecks, make it inner city black dudes with gold teeth and corn rows. Instead of using religion to brainwash "normal" young men, make it raping white women. Release the movie in the run up to the 2008 presidential election. What would you have? You would have a media fueled public backlash of biblical proportions.

I can never understand why some people do not see the forest for the trees?

@Jim:

I've just realised what you mean by "red state". (Republican controlled?) I had no idea that was what the film title was pertaining to. If it is, I can see where you're coming from, but only up to a point. For any non-US audience, this will go mostly unnoticed. I have to say, I'd still be surprised if it was a major issue even in the USA. Here in the UK red is the colour of Labour and blue is Conservative but very few people would make any connection between this and a movie that used the colour to have a pop at one of the parties.

And even if they did make the connection, I doubt most people would really care.

Then again, I often forget how much of a "support your team, no matter what," farce politics has become for some people.

Red State / Blue State have become common terms for historically republican or democrat controlled states.

You almost get my point, but not quite.

Red and Blue states is a fairly recent verbage in our 200+ years of a nation. Though in it's short few decades it's come common place. My understanding is Red was assigned to Republicans because of a longer history where the 'Red Menance' was seen as Communists in the USA. Associating Red to Dems could have unintentially been name calling itself. Now why we need colors and can't say Dems or Repubs or other terms I'm not sure.

Because the movie you describe was made already. Haven't you seen Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood? And what's wrong with white girls who rap?

@Jim:

That's right - but I don't really recall its usage before 2000. It may have been common before then but I just don't remember hearing it.

However, I have thought for a while that there might be a massive money making / satire inducing venture to be had in selling "Republican Flags".

It also occurs to me that since there are Red States and Blue States there is room for a third party to have the White States - but I don't imagine that would go over so well. Maybe Utah?

Use the flip side for name and stereotypes.

The problem with that is, there is nothing on the left that even begins to challenge the power the religious far right wield on any level. Not in numbers, not in terms of organisation.

make it inner city black dudes with gold teeth and corn rows.

Presumably you have some stats to back up this demographic being inherently left wing?

Instead of using religion to brainwash "normal" young men, make it raping white women.

Because black people are inherently left wing and secretly want to rape white women.

The comparison doesn't stand up to even the most fleeting scrutiny.

On the other hand, we have the tea party, through which we have religiously motivated laws being passed by state legislature. We do have far right religious dominionists who are active today and in very large numbers.

Now if you could find a far left group that was also extremely authoritarian, dominionist in it's outlook and numbered in the millions, you'd have a point.

Problem is, by any reasonable measure, the Democrats could at best only be seen as left of the Republicans, not even a centreist party. Left of the Democrats you've got... Well nothing that I can see. Certainly nothing that pops up on radar at any rate.

Release the movie in the run up to the 2008 presidential election. What would you have? You would have a media fueled public backlash of biblical proportions.

Almost certainly, but that backlash would be not on the basis of politics, but because of the pure, unadulterated racism being put on display.

Mississippi Burning was on last night whilst I was at work and the above comparison is not too far different from the description given by a clansmen speaking to the media about what they were supposedly fighting against. And no Red, that's not a dig at you personally, but at the mindset that would honestly view the above as legitimate.

I can never understand why some people do not see the forest for the trees?

Indeed.

RE Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood.

Seriously Red, don't do it, there are some crimes against cinematography that should be left unviewed.

It also occurs to me that since there are Red States and Blue States there is room for a third party to have the White States -

equal parts red & blue = purple

purple state refers to swing states or battleground states

if I were to see such a film I would judge it on how well it was done and if it stayed true to at least it's internal logic. if it failed it's a bad film. that is: a failed attempt at film making.
if it was well made but I disagreed with it's premise that would be my simple comment. If it is wrong it's not going to change my mind about the issues it presents. It's only a film. I still have my brain and I'm not going to stop being able to reason.

I'm sure some people find that film mel gibson made about jesus and his 'death' a wonderful film. But I knew I didn't wish to endure it because I find that kind of film gratuitous violence and that just makes me want to throw up. I also never watch those horror films like friday the 13th for the same reason. gore gore gore for the 'fun' of it. I don't find films like that ART.

would people object to this 'film' you describe? maybe. I would hope they would object to a stupid idea. it frankly sounds like a complete bore.
