Yep... welcome to the new cold war... same as the old cold war. I do find it interesting how Putin certainly appears to be steering in that direction.

Putin wants another Cold War. It gives him purpose and makes it easier for him to maintain his power. I guess murdering and imprisoning all your opponents isn't enough these days.

Both sides want it. There was a panic (well, not among the public but among the ruling classes) when the Soviet Union fell. Who will be our enemy now? They been looking for quite a few years now and the best they've come up with is Bin Laden. The US has been beating itself against the sand of an enemy it can't possibly defeat. It needs to define itself by hammering against the anvil of an enemy it can't possibly fight.

I think Putin needs it more then the US. Historically, I don't think the Cold War favored any particular US party, nor did it lead to tje Patriot Act style of BS laws. If anything, the end of the Cold War seems to have favored the Republicans as Clinton was the only post-Cold War Democrat. Also, with the Cold War over, the US seems to have enjoyed it's Lone-Super-Power status as it does whatever it dreams up without consequences. Now there's consequences, as it has to be a bit more careful where it sells it's weapons and where it installs missiles. Remember all those missile treaties they discarded? Well, they might be needed once again. In a way I think the US expected a return to the cold war and used this little break to make a mad dash across Eastern Europe to ensure that when Russia does roll back to it's Soviet ways, it'll at least be a bit weaker. I can see the argument that the US pushed Russia into this Cold War, and I can see that being part of the Neocon agenda, but I'm not sure that was Clinton's or even George Bush Sr's agenda.

Of course, all this could change come November. Not sure if McCain is a real Neocon. Since I have no expectations that Americans will make a wise decision and vote for Barack, I just hope McCain will not continue on the path of Bush jr - but everything I've read about him and his religious freak VP tells me that he will.
