Sandy on the way

me too... i dont know what would happen to the barbie thread or the war on women one if you weren't around.;)

Storm causes the early research is showing, according to the weatherman this morning. It appears some of the leading factors of this storm were the low jetstream and ocean temps. The low arctic ice level appears to have caused the low jetstream keeping it above NJ. It's typically out to sea at this time of year. The warmer than normal ocean temps allowed Sandy to keep her strength and build it a little prior to landfall.

On the plus side some of my friends that live in NYC were visiting their friends in DC. So they were fine. They have no clue what their apartment looks like.

Comcast offers free WiFi service in affected storm areas

non-subscribers New Jersey, Maryland and West Virginia can join the "xifinitywifi" network on their devices and then choose the "complimentary trial session" good for 2 hrs.

AT&T and T-Mobile on Wednesday agreed to let their customers in New York and New Jersey use either company's mobile network to make calls.

ok, I'm at my brother's again.

here's the LIPA outage map:
http://www.lipower.org/stormcenter/outagemap.html

when Sandy hit the number was about 900, 000 and now it's 536,499 customers without power.

Last night we noticed planes flying into JFK. Now, normally, you see a plane on the typical flight path and then minutes pass before you see another. Last night they were coming in VERY close together. We figured these were the military planes (Hercules?) that were bringing in the people from out of state that the President mentioned.

Maybe a dozen planes had passed by before I noted the time - around 8PM - but more came after that. I can't tell you how good that made us feel. A thousand heroes coming for their fellow Americans. I don't want to sound gooey. After all, I'm mostly just inconvenienced. Our home is intact. No real damage. I didn't have to worry about the water coming in. Sure, I worry about my mother and try to keep her warm. But part of her therapy is walking about. Yesterday, we took her to the bank and a diner for hot food, today we are at my brother's making hard boiled eggs so they don't go bad.

But I do worry about the people who were REALLY hit hard. I don't have access to all the news but it must be horrific.

Some Libertarian friends on Facebook were going all conspiracy theorist claiming Obama was going to delay the voting this year and 'steal' the White House. I posted the opposite that said if anything voting will be extended but not delayed or blocked.

The 'fear of everything' world view survived. DC announced extended early voting. Maryland is allowing extra days for early voting mailings. NY extended days to send out absentee voter registration and extended dates which they'll receive the mailings back. To date no scary government overthrows..

I wish I had a good camera to take pictures of the military planes coming in because as they flew by the Moon was rising. I'll just have to paint the picture with words. There were a couple lines of clouds across the Moon - sometimes giving it a kind of "hat".
The lights of the planes could be seen crossing it's face.

It's quite amazing seeing the neighborhood dark with the sky bright from the Moon - it's been that was just about every night. And the Moon light reflected in all the clouds.

When LA had a power outage people reported strange lights in the sky. Turned out it wasn't aliens as reported. It was the Milky Way - many cidiots had never seen it before.

what I HAVE heard on the radio is that military vehicles will be anywhere polling places have been destroyed or no power. mail in votes have their deadlines extended. I am lucky to have an EXCELLENT governor who is holding all power companies to account. I don't have time to look for his speech but anyone who wants to look for Governor Cuomo speech about LIPA.

On the contrary, we will NOT let the koch bros steal this election

So long as it stays funny. How're your food & water supplies? Are new supplies getting in?

we had no problem with water. and food was available at the local supermarket. Even if it was limited at 1st (only non perishable foods the 1st day) ...what saved us was the local Panera. They had no WiFi, but we were able to get in and recharge. We had no phone at the house because it's Verizon and works on electricity. Even though there's a backup battery it only works for about 8 hours and I'm not even sure that was true in this case.

in any case we prepared as well as we could. cooked some food beforehand, etc.

you may well be wondering why I am online??

well, we left for my brother's around 10AM and, after passing several incredibly LONG gas lines got to his place. Stayed several hours getting some work done, fixing the food, etc.

returned home at 3:13PM......and SHOCKINGLY, the lights were Back on!!

:banana::banana::banana: - if there was ever a use for this smilie it's this one!

Tues morning we noticed on the main drag that part of it was Entirely closed off....cop car lights rotating. and it was like that for days. Today, (we just came back from a some simple shopping) the road was open. I think it's too much of a coincidence. That pole I saw which was at a precarious angle HAD to have been at least part of the problem. I'm guessing there was some live wire somewhere or why close off a six lane street for days with the police there?

so, I'm BACK!!! :D

gas lines...yes, I was stopped at a red light so I could only get the people waiting (red cans)...but the car line went down the block, then Around the block...and DOWN several blocks after that. This is the main drag I was telling you was blocked off (to the left side of the picture, several blocks). This guy was closed the last few days and obviously is doing great business now that he is open.

two trees down. and can you imagine what the guy who owns that car feels like. What a bummer. Even if the car is basically ok, he can't do anything until the professionals remove the tree.
