The wussification of the American Male continues

Was my take away from that supposed to be I am a knuckle-dragging homophobe?

no... and i don't think you are a homophobe... but both the republican and libertarian parties are filled with homophobes. it's okay to walk away from them until they get it together...

It's clear that elected Republican support of equal marriage rights is very low, I'd say non-existent.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_supporters_of_same-sex_marriage_in_the_United_States Whereas the majority of the US Population supports the idea. Any Representative is supposed to represent everyone, not just their base. As we know various politicians support their select base instead of all the citizens. If the Republicans were reflecting this general population they'd be a lot more onboard. Heck if Republicans were supporting their base then about 30% would be onboard. (30% Is what people who identify themselves as Republicans poll at.) To date that's not happened yet.

We've seen Republicans talk to how awesome their minority support is. If so then the Republican Party has a huge marketing problem. The vast majority of minorities don't vote Republican. I've said this before that Republicans could own this issue. If they ran the ball over the proverbial goal post it'd be a HUGE positive for their minority rights and they'd gain future voters.

The problem as I see it is -- Will the Republicans move control of their party to the Libertarian Wing who supports equal rights? Or will power reside in the Evengelical Wing that controls the personal morals impact approach of the party.

actually, it depends on which part of the US you live.

In a very cosmopolitan area like NY (which includes neighboring States like NJ, Conn. and areas like Long Island), people are generally unconcerned by people's eccentricities. Or, rather, they are really good at ignoring them.

on the other hand, there are places in the "south" where you can get killed if you are discovered to be gay.

I'm sorry and horrified to say that this has happened.
I know this all, the post was more or less intended as rethorical. I wanted to point out to Red that his views on this case are not very freedom-loving.

The Libertarian platform officially supports not only gay marriage, but all forms of polygamy too.

Certainly the Libertarian Platform does support gay marriage. However, we know that Republicans are not Libertarians

“If we do change, we’ll be the Whig Party....We’re not the Libertarian Party, we’re the Republican Party.” - Republican Rick Santorum.

Nor have the Republicans who claim to be Libertarians stood up in support of that position in their platform. Tea Partiers, claim to be Libertarian, none of those have stood up. Michelle Bachmann, MN's own crazy right-winger that claimed God told her to bring the Tea Party to the White House, isn't standing up. Rand Paul, Ron Paul? Nope. Rand Paul has ripped into Democratic supporters of gay marriage and said gay marriage is hard to understand. So not that 'Libertarian' Republican either.

I think Conservative commentator Bill Kristol is spot on when talking about Republicans. - "Not only will those earn the contempt of people who believe in defending traditional marriage but they won’t even get credit for hopping onto the bandwagon. " If the Republicans don't get on board between now and June they will be seen as Johnny Come Latelys. In case people don't know the end of June is when the Supreme Court is to decide on the Gay Marriage item before them.

@Redrumloa,

At the local level the Democratic Representation is pushing forward with a Equal Marriage proposal. The Republicans have all rejected it. Today they came back with a 'Civil Union' bill. That sounds all great except that at the Federal level 'Civil Unions' have no recognition and thus will not get any Federal benefits that are marriages allow. Much is tax related - such as tax free transfer of property between married couples, Federal joint tax filings, higher taxes to inherit your civil union partner wealth, for some example. Other examples would be still recognized as single for Veterans Benefits that spouses can get, Medicaid, next of kin status and other custodial rights.

If the Republicans really support Gay Marriage, as you say they do, they surely aren't demonstrating it with this sort of action. You'd think they would have learned that separate but equal is not equal.

Specific examples please.
Eh, this very thread?

the american male prolly needs to be "wussified" at least to some degree... buh bam!!

Just because one group in one region does not mean everyone. In the group of people I know, not one would oppose gay marriage in 2013.

Times are changing faethor. The best thing gay people have done is come out of the closet. It is easy to discriminate against people you don't understand their lifestyle and (think you) never met. When they are members of your family, coworkers and childhood friends, it can help put things in perspective.

Indeed the times are changing. The problem is the Republicans Representatives are not changing. This shouldn't be surprising to anyone. After all they call themselves the conservative party. The group, by their own definition, associates themselves with digging their heals into Traditional Values and therefore are reluctant to, and often completely opposed to change. So, what we'll see is Republicans "Leadership" will be the final ones across the finish line. That's why the 'Libertarian' Leadership aren't bothering to stand up for their own principles. It's not the population and not the Dems blocking gay marriage it's the Republican Elect.

Red - here's an example of things we find in the Southern USA which aren't in the North
Georgia School to hold their first integrated prom
That kinda reminds, I was talking with a waitress not too long ago and she mentioned she just came back from a trip to Georgia. She liked it, but she pointed out some surprising cultural differences. For instance, she never heard the term "porch monkey" before, and when she asked for clarification she was rather shocked as she wasn't expecting that sort of thing. Canadians never hear that kind of thing up here and I'm sure there are many more colorful terms we could pick up with a little trip down South.

And blacks call each other "niggers" all the time and call whites "crackers", "honkeys" and "ghosts". Ignorance is ignorance and not all in the south are like this.

It appears Red's experience differs than mine. I do note in my trips to the South that discrimination is more front and center in that part of the USA. Discrimination is a universal and there are crazies all over. I'll note Red can simply throw up Michelle Bachmann to demonstrate the North has it's own crazies.

Having traveled to Winnipeg a few times I'd say there's not much difference between Minneapolis and Winnipeg. But, there is notable differences between them and Memphis, for example. Perhaps they just choose to use their First Amendment Rights more frequently.
