Charged with spying.

SPYING?

Yeah, 'cause everybody knows spying's BAD, mm'kay?

Bwahahahaha......

This should torpedo, once and for all, the stereotype that Americans don't do irony. :D

NSA leaks: US charges Edward Snowden with spying

The US justice department has filed criminal charges against a fugitive ex-intelligence analyst who leaked details of a secret surveillance operation.
The charges against ex-National Security Agency (NSA) analyst Edward Snowden include espionage and theft of government property.
In May, Mr Snowden fled to Hong Kong after leaking details of a programme to monitor phone and internet data.

The US is also reported to be preparing an extradition request.

According to Cheney if Snowden released the names of the US workers involved with spying that'd be ok.
Good point. I always believed the Whitehouse committed treason when they leaked Valerie Plame as a CIA agent. Snowden probably did commit treason but so did Cheney.

We also don't know if the NSA leaks by Snowden weren't just a diversion for other secrets he may have secretly sold to China and/or Russia. I still think his choice of hideouts is peculiar. Sure, if an authoritarian government is what you hate, releasing info about secret government snooping campaigns on it's citizens makes sense. But fleeing to China or Russia doesn't make sense to me. Nor does it make sense for those nations to harbor someone who's clearly anti-authoritarian. He'd seem like a trouble maker to any authoritarian government, even if they are enemies of the US. Unless of course there was some previously arranged deal that we're not aware of.

Snowden left Honk Kong and fly to Moscow. He wasn't on his scheduled flight out of Moscow to Cuba but the Russians say he had already left. Snowden has been offered asylum by Ecuador but is Ecuador safe? America kidnaps people it wants from Ecuador. Or might they not bother and simply drone him? If he is in Ecuador they don't have much in the way of air defense nor reprisal capacity. On the other hand, Snowden is white and he's been on TV and doesn't look "evil" so it would be a tough sell - maybe. But if he did get droned ... would you be out on the street protesting it? Would anyone want to be the journalist that writes the story saying it shouldn't have been done that way?

There could be a prearranged deal, it would make sense if he's organized enough to get himself out of harms way before leaking. He may have been able to give the Chinese and Russians something they didn't already know or maybe just confirm somethings they already suspected but I'm sure they were happy to help him because of the "embarrassment" factor, the great PR value of having a fugitive American passing through. It's like the US and UK welcoming soviet defectors. Traitors, every single one of them, Pravda would say for the home audience, but even if they had zero actionable intelligence on them it was a PR win to help them out and make a lot of noise about it in the press.

Even if Snowden didn't have any extra info to buy passage the Russians and Chinese can still say that they learned something and the NSA will have to fret about what it might be.

embarrassment factor is an excellent rationale... and worth a lot more in the international PR market place at this point in time than some might think... basically from what i gather we are all being spied on by everyone... :(

"Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is really cute. I don't care what anyone says," @Cristina__Des tweeted. "I'd date him."
Many notorious accused criminals have attracted legions of fans.
Confessed killer Jodi Arias has sold paintings for $300 a pop on eBay. Luka Magnotta, the so-called "Cannibal killer" and onetime porn actor has attracted legions of female fans who fawn over his photos. And Casey Anthony, who was acquitted of killing her daughter, lives "free off the kindness of others," receiving cash and gift cards in the mail.

so whats it gonna be? single car crash like hastings? magnetic bomb by motorcyclist? outright seal team six style thriller? drone? i think we already know he ain't coming back here alive... ooh maybe poison...

And now John Kerrry is the latest to take an excursion into absurdo-land, explaining that the reason upholding the law is so important is because the USA has transferred seven prisoners to Russia.

Congratulations on making your government look even more wanky, Mr. Kerry; a feat many considered impossible.

It's hard to say. The wild card in all this is that it's been reported that the NSA leak was just the beginning and there was lots more to come. That can cut two ways: 1) They'll do whatever it takes to make sure it never gets released and 2) it might protect him if that data is in the hands of a secret third party that will release it only if something happens to Snowden.

IIRC, he already implied as much.

Nobody really seems to know where Snowden is. The Norwegian Pirate party says that he either has been or will be passing through Norway to Iceland. I'm rather dubious that he would stop to talk to the Pirate Party because I'd be surprised if they would be able to guarantee his safety though they would certainly have an affinity. Iceland would make sense as a destination considering their relationship with Assange and wikileaks.

Of course, he could be dead. We won't know unless he shows up again.

Putin just confirmed he's in Russia.
