US charges Edward Snowden with spying

But without crossing the border. (presumably meaning he didn't pass through customs). So he landed in Moscow but is yet to enter the country.

Indeed and Vlad also said it would be better for all concerned if Mr. Snowden buggered off somewhere else as soon as possible.

Greenwald: Snowden’s Files Are Out There if ‘Anything Happens’ to Him

I suppose that all depends on who's hands they're in. A nation state could easily put together enough computing power to crack any encryption wide open in a matter of weeks or a year or so. If so, the US might not see this as incentive to NOT nab him. Could be quite the opposite actually.
I imagine the files would be in the hands of the wikileaks team. Snowden abd Assange have been in touch and they have an established system and proceedures.

It's a little worrying, if not entirely surprising, that this has turned into a game of "where's Eddie?" with any discussion of the implications of what he actually revealed almost completely expunged from mainstream reporting.

I love the picture on this story. Needs a caption like:"I crush your balls"

What he actually said is almost as funny:

it's like shearing a pig – lots of screams but little wool

It turns out that Snowden was a regular poster at ArsTechnica. And it turns out that ArsTechnica is quite happy to leak all his posts. And they're kinda interesting. But most interesting is his statement that all leakers should be shot.

No wonder he ran. He probably understands the atmosphere in the intelligence community having been steeped in it himself.

Well, it's not exactly leaking it. Like most forums, any registered user could search his profile and find the posts. I don't think posts ever expire in most sections of their forum.

They also posted some personal chat logs from their unmoderated IRC channel, which I kinda think is a weird thing to do, but hey...

Being a long-time lurker around Ars, I faintly remembered the guy, and had stumbled across some of his old stuff a year or so ago while researching something else... The one thing that seems to remain consistent about the guy is his cries for attention. :/ Which is a shame, because it undermines a lot of his point about the things that truly do need to be brought up for informed public discussion.

Meanwhile, a longtime user in the #arsificial channel—one who had been on the receiving end of Snowden's vitriol in some of the exchanges listed above—changed the topic to "Edward Snowden == TheTrueHOOHA."
"He was a total cockmonger," the user wrote.

I do tend to agree with that assessment.

well actually he had to have known going into that job that the FBI would be looking at his online presence during his background investigation for clearance... if he posted the kinds of things most of us post he'd not have got that job...

Well, maybe, maybe not. From the sound of it, he got his initial clearance through his military service. He likely landed the contractor gig largely because his new employer would not have to sponsor him for that clearance, it would just need to be reactivated. Which is a large time and money savings for the contracting house. Hence why they poach those people so aggressively.
