VW TDI turbo blew yet again, going to dump the car. Replacement?

My 99 Cobra had a 4.6L V8 w/ 320+ HP. The best MPG I got was around 26MPG. Daily driving it was 21-22MPG.

Yup, those numbers look almost identical to mine. Which they should. My '01 is basically identical to the upgraded '99.

It will be interesting to see the 2015 Mustang. Rumors are independent suspension and a diet. It's also being sold in Europe for the first time. Along with the 2.5L Turbo, 300HP power plant. I think Ford's smart enough that this won't be a 'ricer' and will continue it's pony roots.

Yeah, it should be really interesting to see. I realize I am among the minority in this opinion, but I was really disappointed by the '05-'14 Mustang designs. The one good thing that came from it is that Coyote 5.0. Hopefully it'll go into a car equally as forward thinking and advanced in 2015. :D

Yeah, those big SUVs turn in some eye-wateringly bad numbers.

You got that right... There is a story behind why we got the Expedition, but I've probably already told it before. Basically I'm not an SUV fan at all, but with such a big family we needed to replace a 7 seater and we got a steal on it at the time. Then again the minivan we had before it was not a ton better. That Mercury Villager would be lucky to get 17 highway and it certainly was no beast to drive. With the kids growing, hopefully we can replace the Expedition with something that doesn't butt rape us at the gas pump in the next couple years.

The in-laws bought a newish Murano while spending the winter in their Phoenix AZ home, which means, they'll be selling their 2007 Murano. I'm not an SUV fan either, but I might consider buying it off them as I know it's been well taken care of and we might get a deal (if not, forget about it). I've actually driven it a couple of times now and it's not bad overall. I was really hoping to replace my car closer to the end of this year, but the stupid balancer shaft seal has sprung another leak (now I'm convinced there must be internal damage resulting in excessive play with the balancer shaft - I'm considering just cutting the belt driving it but I'm not sure if that'll stop the leak. Unfortunately deleting the shaft, which is common, requires removal of the engine). We did install a retaining clip that will prevent the seal from completely popping out and draining all the oil, so I guess I could just keep topping off the oil until next year, but that's such a pain (plus I don't think my parking spot can absorb any more oil). So who knows, I might end up with a white 2007 Murano with a MPH tachometer some time soon (the old one was bought in the US as well). No, not as cool as a Challenger, but I bet I can get the baby car seat in there a lot easier than I can with the Prelude!

@Glaucus,
The Ford GT was certainly pretty! Hennessey recently announced they're done upgrading their platform. They ripped out the supercharger, rebuilt the engine and used twin turbos. (Twice as much problem for Red). They were able to get 267.7MPH out of that beast, just late March of this year.
Now why they had to put an ugly-ass paint job on it, I don't know.

I added a Borla to it. I forget the HP claims. But, the sound was even better. I think it was the Stinger? There was a cold air mod on it too.

While the retro design isn't my favorite I think it worked well. The problem I see is Ford kept it unchanged for too long.

If Ford's putting the Stang in Europe it has to be lighter in part to qualify for better MPG requirements. I think that can be a good thing. Also, I really like the new Ford's reuse of the Aston Martin front end. A freshened Mustang with that front end would be ready for Bond. It'd be prettier than the Mach I in Diamonds are Forever.

Ha! Looks like my car finally killed itself today! I'm on my way to work, on campus actually, and just as I'm taking a yield I hear a strange noise coming from my engine bay. The kind of noise you'd expect from a belt rubbing up against something at very high speed. Before I know it, my RPMs read zero. I let the car coast into a parking lot and I try to start it. It sputters but dies. Not good. So I had it towed to the shop that changed my timing belt a few months ago.

So ya, I'm thinking it's my timing belt that slipped. And on an interference engine, that usually means the engine destroyed itself. So who knows, I may be the owner of a 2007 Murano sooner then expected!

You had a Subi? How many miles? When did you last change the timing belt?

No, I was thinking of getting a Subaru, but they're so darned expensive (well, the WRX's are expensive, and that's what I wanted). No, it's a 97 Honda Prelude. Had the timing belt changed in Jan of this year, along with water pump and all the front seals. In march they had to replace a broken timing belt tensioner (how it didn't slip when that thing broke, I'll never know). The mileage is around 150,000 Km which is around 93,000 Miles. I wouldn't be surprised if the replacement tensioner they put on failed, although this noise is different from what it was doing when the prior tensioner failed. Still, even the prior tensioner, broken as it was, the car ran fine, it just sounded really bad (I think it was just rattling behind the timing belt cover but it kept the belt tension).

Btw, the Subaru Boxer engine uses a timing chain, so none of this would happen (unless the chain broke I guess). It also lacks those stupid balancer shafts which greatly simplifies the overall engine configuration.

Good luck on the Honda. I hope it's nothing serious.

Subaru Boxer EJ25 - the 2.5L used from 96-today are timing belts . I think Subi's 6-cyclinders had chains. I believe the new Impreza with the 2.0L 2012-today when they redid the flat 4 to be a longer stroke they now are using timing chains.

i bought this car.... well, not this one... mine runs and has tires and prolly less mice... should a feller chop two inches off the lid? they aren't a real collectible car even tho' they are really neat... im only six foot tall so the thing is already roomy enough for me...

Here's a car we didn't mention
2013 GT-R Black Edition

Mostly I just wanted to point out how funny Nissan is. Calling their car a Black Edition and it comes in Red. Someone at Nissan must have had their Crayola's stolen in grade school.

You mean it only comes in red?

Those cars are actually pretty amazing. Don't care for the styling, but I saw a race where it went up against two lambos, two porsches and I think a lotus, and it came up top. The Murcealago was leading most of the time, but suffered an engine safety shutdown due to an overheated exhaust. The GT-R was close behind and jumped ahead just in time to cross the finish line first. Reliability and Italian never really go together....

For sure. It's kind of a strange little beast, but the performance they get out of it is mind boggling. It is definitely an odd choice to show the press picture of a Black Edition vehicle in red, though. But hey, it does have black wheels and a black spoiler. :P

Well it has been a week since I've had the Challenger and the reality of the fuel consumption is hitting home, as I knew it would ;) In the Golf TDI I would average 2x fill ups a month at about $45 a fill up. In the Challenger it looks like I'll be filling up ~5x a month at about $70 a fill up. After the novelty wears off, I may buy a cheapo used econobox for a daily driver or at least for the days I have to commute to my building in the next county over. If I do that, I'll put a car cover on the Challenger and drive it primarily on weekends.

I was actually thinking of asking you that very question today. I was also gonna ask you how you're budgeting for the speeding tickets! ;)

Ah yes, the curse of having a nice car. Sometimes you can't afford to NOT have a crapbox to offset it. :D Though there are also benefits to having a crapbox in the family fleet. Mine is currently an extremely crappy Chevy HHR. The engine and trans aren't bad. The rest of the car is a giant festering turd. But it was mega-cheap. (shrug) I need to get the insurance back on the Cobra. It's been garaged for the extra-long winter. I went to move it a few days ago, and the battery didn't have enough juice to unlock the doors.

Subaru BRZ looks like a fun ride. I avoid riding in one because I think I'd end up with one at home.

I said it 5 years ago, I'll repeat it now. You should start selling the kids now while they can still do yard work but can't yet vote.. Prime selling time..

Plus, sell the first one, it motivates the rest to behave and get better grades.. :)

Just for the record Jim, I went from the Dodge RAM 1500 (5.7 HEMI) which was, on average $100/week to the VW Passat which -- so far -- is filled up once per month at about $60... That 1.5 mile commute to work hurts my mileage a LOT but it's manageable in the Passat.

Oh to live that close to where I work, much walking would I do...

It all depends... 1.5 miles of what, exactly.
