Not sure if serious but here goes, just in case:
1. When you finish eating in a restaurant, you normally ask for the cheque (or the bill).
2. 'Mate' is manner of addressing someone and usually associated with Australians.
3. Ergo, where someone of another nationality may say, "Bill please, my good man," an Australian may say, "Cheque, mate."
4. The move depicted in the image is check-mate.
5. Having to explain a joke in this manner absolutely destroys any lingering, residual humour it may have once had.
1. I've never eaten at a place where you ask for a cheque. This is totally new to me. I eat at places where you pay at the counter when you order. Robert, where do you eat? Maybe you are too posh?

3. I've never heard anyone say "Cheque, mate". What's Ergo?
