I meant to say "Most of the population, even those calling themselves conservative, are to the LEFT of what is calling itself the center."
I was trying to set up a contrast and gaffed on the right/left bit.
My point was that the ideological "center" had moved so far right it had passed over the population as a whole passing to the right of even most conservatives leaving them on the left of the center (not that they would identify that way, but what they care about and what they think would be sensible social policies are left of what the political class are calling center. Even so, much of the political class likes to call itself center but are actually to the right of that center.
