Georgia, the Olympics, the US armada and Iran

Perhaps, but the bear is infested with rabies too. Personally, I see no reason at all to trust the highly authoritarian Russia. Say what you want about the US, but Russia is just as bad or worse on every level.

So was this fracturing of NATO part of the US plan as well? Or was this just an oopsie by the geniuses at the Pentagon?

If NATO and the UN isn't for the USA interests then certainly we shouldn't bother.

Well, not sure that Georgia is JUST a US interest. I think it's in Europe's best interest to resolve this and quickly, and what's going on with NATO suggests that Europe and the US differ only in their approach (and honestly, when has this been news?). I think Europe wants to dangle some carrots for a while and hope Russia gets the hint. The US wants to bully Russia out of the way. The Europeans are probably on the right path, but I have a feeling Russia is waiting for one hell of a carrot to be dangled. There's no doubt in my mind that Russia pre-planned this well in advance. I'm sure they want something for their troubles.

Didn't Georgia bomb the area first?

You know this first crisis in the post-cold war era is a tricky thing.

I think this would fit with the neo-cons general modus operandi, i.e. old Europe doesn't matter, the US is so darned huge and militarily dominant they can do whatever they want and no-one would dare stand against them. They also seem to work on a "blow it up now, if it doesn't work out we'll sort it out later" kind of plan.
