Riot in London last night

From a police blog I'm following as it's doing live updates of the situation:

Police living quarters at Stavely house, Whitmoreans in Wolverhampton attacked by IC3 mob ( … hmmmm now theres a shock!) windows put in, officers personal motorvehicles attacked and a large fire has been started outside the building …. Trumpton have just turned up put it out .
Youths massing in other areas of Wolverhampton.
Officers just told over the air ‘do not wind anyone up or antagonise youths’
…. You honestly couln’t fu**ing make it up!!

Now kicking off in Toxteth, Liverpool. Police station in Birmingham on fire.

Apparently trouble in Bristol now too.

Well that does it, Winnipeg has officially lost it's "Arson Capital" designation!

England's international friendly against the Netherlands has been cancelled as well now.

Not surprised, the Dutch would never have put up with this.

Perhaps not but I doubt that was the only motivation.

Up to 90,000 football fans, many of them drunk, pouring onto the streets of a potentially riot-bound London at ten pm? I imagine that was as big a consideration as what the Dutch might think.

Humourous, staged scene from the news.

I've had BBC News24 on for thast hour and a half and they interviewed a resident who started up a facebook page to clean up the mess on his street (fair play to him), whilst his neighbours swept and picked up invisible rubbish behind him in what appeared to be a staged scene. They had obviously already cleaned up this part of the street as the tarmac was spotless but three folk were sweeping a very small part of it anyway.
An hour they went back and interviewed one of his neighbours at the same spot and the original interviewee and (I assume) the other two from before were there again with their brushes.

That bit of tarmac must now be so polished you could see your face in it.

It's not often I have rolling news on for so long and it's getting more farcical by the minute:

"... only 1 in 5 officers are trained to wear protective headgear."

I know some of them aren't the brightest but not having the ability to put a helmet on?

Sky News just reported that the man found shot in a car amidst last night's rioting has died.

Sky News:
"Tottenham wants answers about the death of Mark Duggan."

Many of the police who were in riot gear last night weren't trained to deal with riots. There was one london force who due to the cuts had trained none of their officers for it and had to beg for the kit off of other forces. From the blogs even a bunch of specials were drafted into riot gear just to make up the numbers.

And here's why.

Yardy gangster pulled a gun on armed police, got slotted. The end.

According to Murdoch's channel, Tottenham isn't convinced by that explanation.

Which begs the question: how do you know this is the way it happened?

I agree that seems the most likely explanation but I'm interested to know how you can be so sure.

How quickly we forget Jean Charles de Menezes.
Initial explanation then:
Terrorist wearing bomb vest boards tube and gets slotted by brave police. The End.

If the following story is true (and bearing in mind the source, a kilo or so of salt is probably required), then the looting has reached a whole new strata of pathetic:
