Riot in London last night

Stay safe Karlos...
Not to worry mate, I went to bed after my last post, what with all these early starts ;)

Just looked out the window and there's no sign of a conflagration. I live about 3 miles from the city centre, but as I also live 15 mins from the ground, I'm afforded a decent enough view.

Bonus XP for getting the TV show reference ;)

John Gow usually comments on Scottish issues but his blog on this from the other day is interesting:
Like a low-level chronic illness that suddenly becomes acute, we are all witnessing with horror how many people live among us who have no sense of decency.

Every week we read stories of people being stabbed for no reason while the attackers laugh at the cries for help. We skim over articles at men in daylight hitting strangers over the head with bottles as if it’s normal. We accept that we, or members of our family, don’t walk in certain streets at night for fear of violence. Barbarism and criminality has become so normalised that it is only when we see events of the last few days that we become aware of who we live amongst and the violence we accept.

We will never live in a Utopia, but we must finally accept that our political and education system has severely let down the majority of people who wish to live in a society with at least a semblance of civility.

When this dies down we will read Community Leaders, Social Workers and Sociologists blaming everyone else but the people who committed the violence.

Already seeing it on some of the far left blogs.

--edit--

Is a great article though. Nice find and thanks for posting it.

I subscribe to his blog. It was emailed to me the other day.

He's a decent writer but most of his articles are somewhat parochial, otherwise I would probably have posted one here before.

Scottish police, from as far north as Grampian, are being sent 'dann saaf' as reinforcements.

Let's hope things don't kick off in Aberdeen. Might take them a while to get back up the road.

It takes a village to raise a child. When done improperly it takes a child to raze a village.

@Fluffy, nice video, but you failed to explain where the guys who bombed the trade center and Afghanistan got the idea to do violence. They must have gotten the idea from somewhere else too. You almost make it sound like violence was invented in 2oo1. I got a more realistic explanation: Violence is a primitive instinct that you don't need to learn, just like you don't need to learn fear.

For a lot of people who are less than twenty that's about right - which was my point. We can push the date back but the guys who are rioting now weren't around then.

I can only see one image, the one on the right.

And how do you explain the 2008 riots in Athens? Greece never took part of Afghanistan, Iraq or even Kosovo. They certainly set the example of non-violence as they defied NATO requests for violence. And yet, Athens burned in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Sorry, but I think you're over simplifying things here. It sounds a lot like those right wing nuts who blame violence on video games.
