Ukraine/Crimea

Large amounts of troops and equipment are being moved into the region of Ukraine. In other words there is a significant force build up.

But it's not an offensive force build up, it's a reassuring force build up. Isn't that nice.

And, as usual, you need to read almost to the end for the punchline.

So far there has been no sign during the Ukraine crisis that Russia, whose defense budget is just 10 percent of NATO military spending, poses a military threat to any member nation.

I still think that Putin will sit tight and petition the world leaders for some sense. Ukraine will fall apart and the new government will be forced to fight its own citizens not only in the East but everywhere. Food prices have doubled in a week and people are not happy.
If the Americans show up in force they are going to start looking like chumps if they have to participate in crowd control for the regime. I looks like a long rough road for the people of Ukraine. Hey, maybe Mike will urge his MP to send them weapons. You know how he likes to arm people fighting against their unelected governments.
Crimea got the better deal - though Kiev is cutting the water supply to Crimea in retaliation.

On the other hand, Paul Craig Roberts doesn't think Putin could survive politically if he didn't do something.

No offense, but you haven't added much to this thread have you? That leaves me, metalman and fluffy. I trust neither of those two, which brings me back to my original post in this thread.

Still, seems that the government is having trouble quelling those pesky citizens who don't like the new coup government. Shall we send some of our people and weapons over there so that the Ukrainians we want running the country can kill the ones who don't want them running the country? Would that be egalitarian, democrat and humane?
 
About a week ago I noticed a senate committee had passed a resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide.

Generally the US has been deferential to Turkey on this matter. Turkey would rather it not be recognized. In that light this seemed like a tiny poke (being otherwise meaningleas) at Turkey but there didn't seem to be any reason for it. Perhaps it is just meaningless but maybe it is a display of displeasure.
However, it seems that Turkey may be thwarting US efforts against Russia ... once again, geography matters.

The pro-Russians are militants. Some guys attacked them. That means the eastern Ukrainians, by engaging the attackers, broke the truce. Oh yes, and the "militants" are also "pre-Kremiln rebels".​
