The Muhammad Movie

Show me where Christians rioted over "Life of Brian"?

Well, I remember that a lot of Christians were very cross. The Last Temptation of Christ was also very controversial and drew ire. There were protests and calls for legal and political action to be taken against these films. When John Lennon said that the Beetles were more popular than Jesus they were protested by mobs, threatened and beetles music was burned - the Klan even marched against them.

Perhaps if these movies had been made by Muslims or Muslims had made a movie that deliberately made fun of Jesus then there would have been a stronger reaction among the nuttier sects of Christianity. There are plenty of nutty Christians - though probably if nutty Christians rioted it would be considered a) justified, b) not a riot, c) not get on the news.

in just the past few days we’ve seen a wave of bombings that killed 92 people in 13 Iraqi cities, a car bomb that killed 11 in Pakistan, a rocket attack in Afghanistan, an assassination attempt on the Yemeni defense minister (that killed 12), an assassination attempt on the Somali president (that killed 8), a suicide attack on a police station in Istanbul … and various other attacks.

I think those bombings are more about the US trampling on those countries for decades. The insult to the prophet is just a rallying cry. If we had dealt with them fairly and allowed their countries to stay in the 20th century instead of smashing them back to the dark ages all the time I bet by now they would have been able to take a joke.

We have been building this "enemy" for a long time and I think deliberately so. If there is one thing that can breed radical violent religion it is constant attack. A community under attack WILL turn inward and rout out dissenters, will adhere to strict and harsh social rules because in a matter of survival group cohesion trumps individualism. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if the US Christian Right wasn't full of glee at having a fundy religion as an enemy - because it can serve to unite Xtian fundies in fear. Fundies feeling fear makes rulers selling security powerful people. If it's not an actual conscious plan then it is, at least, part of the DNA of religion to build walls of hate in times of stress - like when a slime mold finds it's resources running low then all the million of cells act together to build fruiting bodies to scatter spores to potentially greener pastures.

define riot...

The film opened to widespread protests as 39 local authorities refused to allow the film to be screened on grounds it could break censorship laws on blasphemy.
Where the film was shown, it was picketed by religious groups and the Pythons – John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam – received death threats.

and Life of Brian is a masterpiece of brilliant satire.
I went to see it in the theater and loved it. Of course, having endured 16 years of catholic school it was like medicine. Much like listening to George Carlin - said all the things many of us were thinking only said it WAY better than I could.

A true atheist is a serial killer
More false assertions? You can search here for prEvious conversations around that failed idea. I thought it was you but I could be wrong in my recall perhaps it was Fade or another. Various serial killers believed themselves to be Christians. They may not fit your narrower definition. But God gets to decide that, not you.

What you don't see is atheists killing massive amounts of people because people don't agree with their atheism. Whereas the history of religion is killing others off to prove how more loving their God is.

Assuming for sake of argument your statement is correct, we get to compare head count of the dead. A few hundred killed by serial killers is indeed sad and unacceptable. Hower it's but a pittance compared to the millions of dead from religion.

the day may come that we see atheists rise up and slay christians in large groups, if we want peace, it may be demanded of us. but guess what folks, hungry people will kill people too... we can play the "what if" game with almost any group of people and see a point in their evolution where upon, mass murder will be deemed necessary, if not crucial to said groups survival....

atheists are certainly grouping together to insist on their civil rights.

there's no talk of killing, however.

which reminds me:
Sept 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day in case anyone wants to join in. :D

Mao Zedong killed 45 million in 4 years alone, between 1958 to 1962 in his 'Great Leap Forward", he killed them because they didn't agree with his progressive leadership.

Exactly, not because they refused to accept atheism. Big difference. Sam Harris covered your false idea well. "
The problem with fascism and communism, however, is not that they are too critical of religion; the problem is that they are too much like religions. Such regimes are dogmatic to the core and generally give rise to personality cults that are indistinguishable from cults of religious hero worship. Auschwitz, the gulag and the killing fields were not examples of what happens when human beings reject religious dogma; they are examples of political, racial and nationalistic dogma run amok. There is no society in human history that ever suffered because its people became too reasonable."

already happened in numerous countries where atheism was the preferred government "religion"
