8 Countries Where Atheism Is Accepted, Even Celebrated, Instead of Demonized

There’s a strong correlation between the happiest countries in the world and the least religious countries in the world, and along with Sweden and Denmark, Norway rates at the top of both lists. The two measurements have a complex relationship with each other. People likely look to religion less when they want for less, for one thing, but it also may be that atheism flourishes in nations where people demonstrate high levels of commitment towards a socially just government and shared economic benefits. If you have faith in your nation and your fellow citizens, putting faith in religion as well might just seem rather pointless.
In 1905, France passed a strong law mandating a strict separation of church and state, and since then, secularism has been a strong central French value.
what atheists want more than anything is for a complete and total separation of church and state.

Atheists are NOT interested in forcing anyone to be an atheist. Because, frankly, it's not possible. A person has to THINK in order to appreciate the values of being rational. It's not a question of faith or accepting what other people tell you to believe. Plus, there's no membership. It's not a club. And you don't pay to belong.

The only thing an atheist wants is to be left alone in peace to live as they wish

WALLACE: This week, there have been anti-American protests in two dozen countries across the Islamic world.Tthe White House says it has nothing to do with the president’s policies. Let’s watch.
JAY CARNEY: This is not a case of protests directed at the United States writ large or at U.S. policy. This is in response to a video that is offensive.
WALLACE: You don’t really believe that?
AMB. RICE: Chris, absolutely I believe that. Because, in fact, it is the case. We had the evolution of the Arab Spring over the last many months but what sparked the recent violence was the airing on the Internet of a very hateful very offensive video that has offended many people around the world. Now, our strong view is that there is no excuse for violence. It is reprehensible and never justified. But in fact there have been those in various parts of the world who have reacted with violence. Their governments have increasingly and effectively responded and protected our facilities and condemned the violence and this outrageous response to what is an offensive video. But there is no question what we have seen in the past with things like Satanic Verses and cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad there have been such things that have sparked outrage and anger and this has been the proximate cause.

Shouldn't Obama be trying to ban the showing of the Sony motion picture about Obama killing Osama bin Laden?

Mao Zedong killed 45 million in 4 years alone, between 1958 to 1962 in his 'Great Leap Forward", he killed them because they didn't agree with his progressive leadership.

Actually he didn't. Just like Hitler didn't kill millions of people. Millions of people who followed those people killed millions of other people.

Atheists as a group tend not to be good followers because they tend to ask "why?" a lot and have their own opinions. That's partly why it's hard to have an atheist revolution.

Unquestioning followers, on the other hand, who act on shallow emotional motives that are given to them ready made riding on a fairy tale of valour and righteousness are exactly what you need if you are a leader lusting after total power - and those are just the sorts of people religion cultivates.

The Will of Allah: Muslim protester dies after breathing smoke from burning US Flags in Pakistan

One of the participants of the rally, Abdullah Ismail, passed away after he was taken to Mayo Hospital. Witnesses said he had complained of feeling unwell from the smoke from US flags burnt at the rally.

Hafiz Saeed alleged that the film, Innocence of Muslims, had been produced with the backing of US establishment. He said the director, the producer and all those involved in the production and release of the movie must be hanged publicly. “The US must make a law against blasphemy – or we will not let the US consulates in Pakistan function,” he said.
He said a resolution condemning the movie in the parliament was not enough. Instead, President Asif Ali Zardari must announce jihad against countries like the US

“When you stop and think about it, that guy couldn’t have made his crappy anti-Islam video without government roads and bridges.”

NON-BELIEVERS GIVING AID

this is what atheists do with their time.

In 2009, MSF medical teams carried out more than 7.5 million outpatient consultations; delivered 110,000 babies; treated 1.1 million people for malaria; treated 200,000 severely and moderately malnourished children; provided 165,000 people living with HIV/AIDS with antiretroviral therapy; vaccinated 7.9 million people against meningitis; and conducted 50,000 surgeries.

Well, I remember that a lot of Christians were very cross. The Last Temptation of Christ was also very controversial and drew ire. There were protests and calls for legal and political action to be taken against these films. When John Lennon said that the Beetles were more popular than Jesus they were protested by mobs, threatened and beetles music was burned - the Klan even marched against them.
This is all true, but there's a distinction here as well. You attack any large group's values or beliefs they're likely to get upset and say something. And in a democratic society, that's alright so long as you keep away from the death threats. No one died from Last Temptation of Christ, but people have died because of movies and cartoons depicting Islamic figure heads.

However I am kinda tired of people blaming an entire group because of the actions of a small minority. Not all Germans are evil because some Germans were NAZIs. Likewise, not all Muslims are terrorist because some are. We must look at other contributing factors as well, such as many of these people are undereducated and live in poorer nations and are exploited by groups who have their own agenda. The likelihood that all these attacks were strictly grass roots is unlikely. Also, Faethor posted a great set of photos demonstrating that many Muslims condemn these attacks.

The Last Temptation of Christ is an interesting example of protests and yes riots from Christians.
* In Sweden, for example, Christians made death threats against the film makers. They shutdown various movie theaters. They demanded their government censor and prohibit the film being shown in their Country. Why? Because it was a violation of their values. Christians in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Turkey, and the Philippines succeeded in getting the film banned from their countries. In France a Christian Fundamentalist group threw Molotov Cocktails inside the Saint Michel theater. Many were injured and it took 2 years to rebuild.
* In the USA thousands of Christians marched on Universal Studioes. General Cinema and other theaters refused to book the film in it's theaters around the USA. Universal Cinema and various theaters hired security guards because the Christians were vandalizing their private property. When released to video many stores, Blockbuster Video for example, refused to carry the film.
* And in 1955 when the novel was released the Catholic Church banned it. The Greek Orthodox Church excommunicated the Nikos Kazantzakis, the author.

All in all I say the elements of Christian right extremisms demonstrated fairly well why their form of Christianity is incompatible with the western enlightenment ideas of freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

@Metalman,

Turns out the creator is an Egyptian Coptic Christian living in California. Unfortunately, his family is now in hiding. Interesting Coptic Christians take their faith from Saint Mark, who met Jesus. By your previous definition they aren't True Christians. True Christians, as you defined them, only take their faith from Paul who actually never meet Jesus.

He also has convictions for intent to manufacture meth and bank fraud. But, as you know - Coptic Christians aren't true(TM) Christians (in fact, they are pretty much true(TM) atheists).

Court records show that Nakoula was convicted on federal fraud charges in Los Angeles in 2010. Among the conditions of his probation, Nakoula was barred from using "any online service at any location" without the prior approval of his probation officer, according to a copy of court records in the case.
it's certainly very easy to get another person to upload this piece of crap for him on to youtube.
heck I've done that.

yeah!!!
Yet it is precisely this infusion of religion into politics that most Americans increasingly oppose. While over the last five years Americans have become slightly more conservative economically, they have swung even further in opposition to mingling religion and politics. It thus makes sense that the Tea Party ranks alongside the Christian Right in unpopularity.

I could be wrong, but 9000 protesters should be far fewer than 0.01%. More like 0.0007%. It seems that the "total" % at the bottom is just a summation of all the % rows, but that's not right.

Yeah. Looked completely wrong to me too. If you're using a spreadsheet program it takes a special effort to make that kind of mistake.
