Someone probably has more direct references and numbers at hand. But from my recollection Constantine approved Christianity within the Roman Empire in the mid-300s. The advant of AD didn't come until the mid-500s when the Catholic Church was attempting to determine the dating around Easter. The use of AD came out of the Holy Roman Empire not the Roman Empire.

For example, the Pontifex Maximus of Rome who was the official in charge of the state religion was still the same office when the state religion changed to Christianity. Pontifex Maximus is still the Latin title of the pope.
